+ THEME- the main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated
directly or indirectly.

+ EXAMPLES OF THEME: 
•Love conquers all
•It’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all
•The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return
•Romance ruins friendship
•First love never dies
•Where there is love, there is pain

+ SUBJECT: War
+ THEME:  War is a curse to humanity
+   Theme is the writer's opinion about the
subject.
ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF POETRY
+ TONE
–The attitude of the writer towards his subject
–We can figure out the tone by the author’s word choice, punctuation, sentence
structure and figures of speech. The manner in which the writer approaches his theme
and subject.

+ EXAMPLES OF TONE:
•Ironic, Sad, Bitter, Humorous, Apologetic, Proud, Lively, Serious etc.
Example of Tone

Father: “We’re going on a vacation.”


Son: “That’s great Dad!”

Father: “We can’t go on a vacation this summer.”


Son: “Ok. Great! As I expected.”
