Eyewitness Account of the

Last Hours of Rizal

Events during the day in prison of Dr. Jose
Rizal
• Most Illustrious Sir ( The agent of the Cuerpo de Vigilancia )

• 7:50am Before Rizal`s Execution he entered death row accompanied by his


counsel.

• 9am ; Rizal was asked by Senor Maure if he wanted anything.

• Rizal spoke for a long time with the Jesuit Fathers regarding religious
matters after Senor Andrade left death row at 10am

• A Retraction on his life and deeds was presented to Rizal.

• Rizal`s lunch was some poached egg and a little chicken and wanted to be
alone for some time.
• At 3 in the afternoon, Rizal handed what he had
written to Father March.

• Rizal Heard mass at 3 a.m. in the morning, confessed


his sins and took Holy Communion.

• At 5 in the morning of the 30th , Rizal`s lover arrived at


the prison dressed in mourning. Rizal embraced her
for the last time and gave her a last gift – a religious
book, Imitation of Christ by Father Thomas Kempis.

• 6:00 a.m. - the soldiers are getting ready for the death
march to Bagumbayan.
Rizal`s Connection to the Katipunan
• La liga Filipina – The precursor of the Katipunan as an
organization

• July 7, 1892 – The Former members ( La liga Filipina)


decided to band together to establish Katipunan a
few days after Rizal`s exile.

• Katipunan ( Kataas – taasang Sanggunian ng


Katipunan ) were formed from 1892 – 1896.
• In 1896, the Katipuneros decided to inform Rizal of
their plans to launch revolution, and sent Pio
Valenzuela to visit Rizal in Dapitan.

• Rizal objected to the plan created by the Katipuneros.

• Valenzuela informed Rizal that the revolution could


inevitably break out if the Katipunan were discovered
by the Spaniards.

• Rizal suggested Gen. Antonio Luna to be recruited to


direct military movement of the revolution.
