The Green Recycling of Used

Lead Acid Battery Solution

Eng. Almir dos Santos Trindade – Director

A Rational and Sustainable
Recycling Option.
Objectives

 After 18 years of research , Antares Reciclagem

has developed “The Green Recycling Process”
that was applied in the main Lead/Acid Battery
recycling units in Brazil ,and today we produce
around 1,000 metric tons of recycled solution
per month . It has been proven to be cost
effective and environmentally friendly .
Objectives

 Normally the effluent

from a battery recycling
unit would be neutralized
and treated in an effluent
treament plant. With the
Antares Green Process a
waste product is being
tranformed into raw
material for other
industries.
Background
 By partnering with Antares, and using our
process , lead/acid battery recycling plants now
have a sustainable, efficient transformation of a
waste product into raw material.
 Our decontaminated acid solution , has been
used in several industries such as Pulp, Paper,
Paint and others.
 All of the lead and other heavy metals recovered
in our process are returned to our clients and
trasformed from a disposal issue into raw
material.
Background

 The recycled acid , is not appropriatly

treated to be re-used in new batteries ,
because our process does not remove all
the iron ions and organic material from
the used acid battery solution .
 We have this technology, but it is not cost
effective , we prefer to send this product
to other industrial process .
Background

 Our model prevents

environmental impacts and
risks to human health. The
companies reduce their
expenses with reagents and
toxic landfill.
Background

 As of today, we have five

working stations and our
installed monthly production
is as follow:
– Tamarana Metais – 220 t
– Baterias Ajax – 120 t
– Baterias Eletram – 220 t
– Baterias Tudor – 250 t
– Ranger – 200 t
Background

 Due to the sucess of our

clients, we are currently in
the process of building four
more units :
– Baterias Pioneiro – 250 t
– Baterias Jupiter – 200 t
– Baterias Baterax – 200 t
– Frey Stuchi – 350 t
Methodology

 Since the recycled acid is not characterized as an

industrial toxic waste , it is treated as a normal
chemical product , and it does not suffer legal
restrictions for hazardous materials transport , it
only needs common environmental licenses for
chemical products transport.
 Our treatment units are built at the locations
generating the acid solution , so there are no
waste transport issues.

Environmental Benefits
 It will greatly reduce waste effluent from
factories;
 There will be better use of treated effluents as
industrial water;
 It will reduce disposal of sulfates;
 It will minimize risk of salt contamination of
ground water;
 It will minimize generation of solid waste and
treated effluent , meeting legal requirements
more readily;
 The process represents an improved and cleaner
technology for recycling without the generation
of calcic muds or salt solutions.

Economical Benefits

 Besides the environmental benefits, our

recycling process will save at least 20%
of the expenses when it is compared
with acid neutralization. This
percentage is evaluated separately for
each industry. It will depend on the
plant location and the amount of acid
produced.

Conclusion

Partnering with
Antares Reciclagem:
Is an example of
Sustainable
Development
preserving the
Environment with
economic feasability.
Conclusion

The Antares Recycling Process for electrolytic

battery solutions is a win-win proposition. The
company wins by minimizing industrial
wastewater and recovering costs. Nature wins
as the process reduces environmental risks
and preserves natural resources. Society wins
a business model that guarantees employment
with sustainable development.
