What are Landforms?
• Landforms are natural features
of the earth's surface.
• This picture is of Koko Crater,
Hanauma Bay and Hawaii Kai
• How many landforms can you

• Island • Peninsula • Volcano
• Canyon • Hill • Bay
• River • Lake • Archipelago
• Isthmus • Ocean
• Valley • Plateau
How Are Landforms Made?
• The formations of landforms are
caused by different reasons
• Weathering
• Erosion
• Deposition
• Landforms are constantly changing.
They are changing right now!
Continents and Oceans
• There are 7 continents
• Can you name the continent in which we live?
• There are 5 major oceans
Continents are Landforms, too!
• Millions of years ago, all the
continents were once grouped all
together
• This ‘supercontinent’ was called
Pangea
• Throughout time, the landforms
moved into how you see them
today
• These landforms continue to
move, even today!
Famous Landforms
• Mountain: Appalachian Mountains
• Canyon: Grand Canyon
• Waterfall: Niagara Falls
• Oceans/Rivers: Atlantic Ocean, Pacific
Ocean, Gulf of Mexico
• Desert: Sahara Desert
• Island: Hawaii
What is a Canyon?
• A narrow valley with steep sides
• Canyons are created by erosion
What is a Canyon Landform?
• When we think of the Canyon landform, the first type of canyon landform
we think of is the Grand Canyon located in North America.
• It has two steep cliffs with a valley that run through it.
• The Grand Canyons has the Colorado River running through it.
How are Canyons formed?
• A Canyon has formed through erosion.
• The Colorado River carved out the great Grand Canyon by taking the
land down the river with it.
• Now, What was left was a river valley with steep cliffs.
• Another way can be formed through wind.
