Parts of a Flower

Stalk (Pedicel)
Flower base (Pedicel)

• Stalk attaches shoot to flower.


• Tip of stalk is flattened and enlarged
called the thalamus.
• The whorls of flower arises from
thalamus.
Whorl 1: Calyx

• Calyx is the outmost whorl of tiny


green leaf-life structures called
sepals.
• Sepals protect the flower when it
is a bud.
Whorl 2: Corolla

• Made up of petals

• Petals are often coloured and


scented to attract insects or birds.
• There are many different varieties
of petals in nature.
Whorl 3: Androecium

• Stamen is the male reproductive


organ
• It has 2 parts:
– Anther (bilobed)
– Filament

• Anthers produce sticky pollen.

• Pollen grains are male sex


cells/gametes.
Whorl 4: Gynoecium

• Carpel is the female reproductive organ

• Also called as Pistil

• 3 parts:
– Stigma

– Style
– Ovary
Whorl 4: Gynoecium

• Ovary is at the base of the carpel.


• Ovules are made here. Each ovule
contains an egg cell.
• Egg cell forms seed after fertilisation
