1. WHAT IS MRI?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI is a medical imaging technique
2. HISTORY OF MRI
• Timeline of MRI
• Father of MRI
Raymond Vahan Damadian

Born March 16, 1936 (age 86)

New York City, New York, United States

Alma mater University of Wisconsin–Madison

Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Known for Inventor of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

First MRI machime (1977) Jedi helmet

Modern MRI scanner

Early MRI scan Modern MRI scan
3. HOW DOES
MRI MACHINE
WORK?
Components of MRI machine

• Magnet
• Gradient Magnets
• Equipment to transmit radio frequency (RF).
• A very powerful computer system
4. PRINCIPLE
OF MRI:
NMR
5. PROCESS OF AN
MRI EXAMINATION
Before the scan:
- DO NOT eat or drink anything for up to 4 hours before the scan

-Some MRI scans involve having an injection of contrast dye. This makes certain tissues and blood vessels show up
more clearly and in greater detail.
During the scan
After scan

After the scan, you can resume normal activities immediately. But if you have had a sedative, a
friend or relative will need to take you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

It's not safe to drive, operate heavy machinery or drink alcohol for 24 hours after having a sedative.

It usually takes a week or two for the results of an MRI scan to come through, unless they're needed
urgently.

AND TYPES OF MRI
Internal images can be seen without making any incisions.
MRIs use radio frequency (RF) light, MRIs do not present any known health risks to the patients;
MRIs are administered to patients suffering from the following:
INFLAMMATION OR INFECTION IN AN ORGAN
 DEGENERATIVE DISEASES
STROKES
MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS
TUMORS
 other irregularities that exist in tissue or organs in their body

Indications?
MRI has a wide range of indications when it comes to medical diagnosis. Generally speaking, it is the
method of choice when the staging of the majority of cancers (prostate, breast, lung etc) is required.
To be more specific, let's list the usage of MRI by organ or system:
 Cardiovascular
 Musculoskeletal
 Liver and gastrointestinal
 Angiography

Contraindications?
People with metal implants inside their body

Pregnant women
8. ADVANTAGES • Benefits of MRI.
AND
DISADVANTAGES
OF MRI • Disadvantages of MRI
Benefits of MRI Disadvantages of MRI

- Non-invasive and No radiation - Expensive ($1000-$1500)

- MRI contrasting agent is less likely to produce an - Cannot be able to find all cancers (i.e. breast
allergic reaction cancers indicated by microcalcifications)
- Extremely clear, detailed images of soft-tissue - Cannot always distinguish between malignant
structures tumors or benign disease (such as breast
- Create hundreds of images from almost any fibroadenomas
direction and in any orientation - Claustrophobic patients
- Cover large portions of the body - An undetected metal implant in a patient’s body
- Determine if a cancer has spread, and help may be affected
determine the best treatment - Small chance of allergic
- Slight risk associated with using the sedation
medication
