ABOUT THE BOOK
 Man-eater of Malgudi is noted novel written by a famous Indian English writer short story
writer novelist journalist R.k.Narayan.
 The novel is famous for variety of its character.
 It was published in 1961 as a social novel.
 It deals with the evil and the good of the society.it shows different type of persons –
good,bad,currupt etc.
 The novel was written after independence
 The novel is set in an imaginary south Indian town Malgudi created by R K Narayan

NOVEL
 Natraj : owner of the printing press
 Sastri : printer , editor , etc.
 Sen : the journalist
 The poet: of Radha and Krishna in monosyllabic verse
 Vasu : the taxidermist , evil character
 Muttu : tea seller
 Rangi : the temple dancer
 Kumar : the elephant of the sacred temple

RANGI :
 Rangi is a famous character of Malgudi. She was professional prostitute but was never ashamed
of her profession. Later in the novel, she provides information to Nataraja that vasu is planning
to shoot the religious elephants for skin and carcass.
 This brings out her religious sense and dedication. She maybe a woman od loose character but
there is much good in her.
 later Mohini role in the play of temple is performed by Rangi. She planned to sedate vasu by
poisoning him using his favourite pulao.
 However vasu refuses to eat the food. instead he refused rangi to fan him first while he sleeps to
ward of the mosquitoes that irritate him . Rangi then falls asleep causing a mosquito to bit
Vasu .
 He then bring his hand to his own fore head forcibly to swat the mosquito thus causing his own
death . Rangi although saved the elephant in the novel but was indirectly the cause of the death
of vasu .

VASU:
 The character of vasu is different from the traditional characters in any Hindu tales as he can be
described as brutal, self-centered ,unpredictable and indifferent to tradition .
 He also has his own sense of morality which may not be understood by others . While one side of
him represents his demonic nature the other suggest the doer , a man of action who hate small talk
and petty mindedness
 He is a patriot , he joined the civil disobedience movement aimed at ending British rule in India
and was jailed for his nationalist activities .
 He is an to be admired as well as hated
 The story of bhasmasur and the traditional community is one story in which a demon is defeated by
the power of faith
 In this story bhasmasur vasu who has gained the power to turn everything he touches into ashes
and he uses this power to kill and threaten anyone that crosses him which leads to his death
