Proposed new simple technology for
cylinder deactivation
•However once we planned for a restriction on the air flow there will
be a negative pressure in the cylinder inside.
•To reduce that we may put a hole in the butterfly valve plate in such
a way, where always it will allow little more than clearance volume
air to flow inside cylinders. Size of the hole will be proportional to
compression ratio. Hence size of the hole will be bigger in petrol
engine compared to a same size diesel engine.
•It will reduce the negative pr load in the cylinder and not allow any
compression air load on crankshaft.
•Although this technology not switch to get accuracy to all cylinders
operation at millisecond level but calibrating the ECM fuel supply
easily possible to overcome “jerk” if any.
Tech/Process: How will the solution work?
Main goal of the ideas to reduce fuel consumption at idle condition by reducing the fuel delivery. By optimizing the same concept through out different driving
conditions based on load verity on roads further fuel save can be explore.
Basically, idea is to switch off completely 50% cylinders of an engine at idle by which we can save a good amount of fuel which will save a significant change in overall engine
fuel efficiency.
If spark & fuel injections stopped from cy no 2 & 3 in a 4-cylinder engine at idle, it will be unable to maintain smoothness to run and stroll but engine will not stop both in petrol
or diesel.
For example, putting a butterfly valves in the intake manifold towards the way of cy no 2 & 3 and controlling it through existing ECM and closing the butterfly valves
in those cylinders respectively, will stop compression load on crankshaft of two cylinders as there will be no suction then no compression load will be on crankshaft.
Engine will remain start smoothly with the help of cy no 1 & 4 as the compression load will be eliminated from cy no 2& 3. The moment driver press the clutch for gear
shifting, again those butterfly valve will open and allow engine to run with full strength.
In the same way fuel can be further save in different diving like cruise speed condition or deceleration etc.
Challenges to implement in a existing engine :
1. Engine intake manifold has to redesign and a butterfly valve has to install.
2. Manifold has to prepare a bit stronger to withstand vacuum pressure throughout engine life.
3. ECM has to calibrate and new wiring has to install for butterfly valve actuation.
4. For petrol engine, vacuum required for brake booster from intake manifold has to balance for smaller engines.
Benefits :
1. Approx. 4-10% increase in overall mileage compare to conventional IC engines as claimed by other manufacturers who have already implemented similar technology.
2. Comparatively easy to implement /modify in the existing engines as no changes required in the cylinder head as other manufactures implemented.
3. Comparatively very cheaper & easy installation and diagnosis.
4. Easy to install in the sold vehicle and cost-effective also.
5. If cut off two cylinders during vehicle start then reduce the load on self-starter and increase the cranking rpm. Hence engine will start faster. It will reduce two glow
plug requirements in the case of a diesel engine. This aspect can be explored during implementing the deactivation technology.
6. It will also reduce the engine vibration during engine shut off.
7. Can through significant business competition to other auto manufacturers as the same results can be achieved with half the production cost.
