MINING INDUSTRY

BY: GROUP II
WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT MINING?

- Mining is the practice of extracting ore, coal, clays, soils, or

minerals from the ground for the purpose of using them.

- Mines have existed for thousands of years.

- In ancient times mines consisted of short tunnels dug into the

sides of hills or mountains where veins of metals, minerals, or coal
had been discovered on the surface.
HOW MUCH WOULD IT COST TO BUILD A
MINE COMPANY?
COST OF OPEN PIT MINING
5,000 Tonne per Day Open Pit Mine Model This mine is an
open pit mine producing 5,000 tonnes ore and 5,000 tonnes
waste per day.
Rock characteristics for both ore and waste are typical of
those of granite or porphyritic material. Operating conditions,
wage scales, and unit prices are typical for western U.S.
mining operations.
All costs listed are in 2012 US$ but converted to PH₱. The
key design criteria, operating schedule, equipment,
personnel, supply requirements and costs are listed below:
Capital Costs
Equipment Purchase ₱449,994,755
Haul Roads / Site Work ₱109,982,405
Pre-production Stripping ₱25,364,820
Buildings ₱91,493,780
Electrical System ₱6,960,115
Sustaining Capital   ₱94,656,515
Working Capital   ₱42,489,745
Engineering ₱126,551,360
Contingency ₱81,035,250
  -------------------------
Total Capital Costs ₱1,028,528,745

Total per Daily Tonne Ore & Waste ₱102,854.45
Cost Summary

THE BENEFITS OF MINING

THE BENEFITS OF MINING

mining creates jobs. It is

dangerous work and every year
people suffer serious injuries in
mining accidents. Some people
even die. But demand for
metals, crystals, coal, and
other minable substances is
only increasing.
THE BENEFITS OF MINING

mining is that it spurs technological development. We

can use some of the safety technologies developed for mining
in other industries, such as constructing deep underground
subway tunnels, water pipes, and other structures.
THE BENEFITS OF MINING

mining provides us with essential

ingredients for everyday items
such as cookware and electronic
components; we also rely upon
mining for the raw materials we need
to build cities, ships, automobiles,
and other artifacts of technology.
THE BENEFITS OF MINING

Mining Is a Cornerstone of Technological Civilization

Mining is not the sole reason why our civilization has
grown so large. Mining is merely one of the reasons why
our civilization can grow so large. By learning to extract
and use the natural materials produced by the Earth we
have been able to shape our environment so that we can
live longer, raise families, and enjoy life in general.
Environmental Risks of Mining

Unregulated mining has the potential to release

harmful substances into the soil, air, and water.

Water use and wastewater

Environmental Risks of Mining

Open pit mining -

- Open pit mining, where material is excavated from an open pit, is
one of the most common forms of mining for strategic minerals.
- particularly damaging to the environment because strategic
minerals are often only available in small concentrations, which
increases the amount of ore needed to be mined.
- Environmental hazards are present during every step of the
open-pit mining process.
Environmental Risks of Mining

Underground Mining
- has the potential for tunnel collapses and land subsidence
- It involves large-scale movements of waste rock and vegetation,
similar to open pit mining
- can release toxic compounds into the air and water
- As water takes on harmful concentrations of minerals and
heavy metals, it becomes a contaminant. This contaminated
water can pollute the region surrounding the mine and beyond.
GINA LOPEZ
What was she known for?

- Serving under President Rodrigo Duterte's government

- led a crackdown on mining in a country known
for its nickel ore production.
- Lopez closed 23 mines and suspended five others, as
well as banning open-pit mining.
- She was lauded for her Alyansa Tigil Mina (ATM) for
fight against irresponsible mining companies
- Lopez's move against elite mining companies cost her the post
as environment secretary, as she was rejected by the Commission
on Appointments. She only held the post for 10 months.

- It was always personal for her, because the

advocacies for her were all about people's lives.
