SIMPLE PRESENT
&
SIMPLE PAST
SIMPLE PRESENNT

In contrast to active voice - simple present tense, the main verb is in the form of verb-1 (in the previous example: simple present

tense), main verb in passive voice – simple present tense in the form of past participle (verb-3).

This formula :

subject + is/am/are + past participle (V3) (+ by)

SIMPLE PRESENNT

past participle is accompanied by an auxiliary verb is/am/are adjusted to the subject in the passive voice (= object in the active voice)

in order to fulfill the subject-verb agreement. (is) is used on the singular subject except (you) and (I); “are” on plural subject and

“you”; while (am) on (I).

If there is a modal verb (such as: can, should, may), the past participle is preceded by the auxiliary verb “be”.

subject) except “you”, while “were” for plural subject (plural subjects) and “you”.
SIMPLE PAST
This formula :

S (direct object) + was/were + past participle +/- by … (agent)

The agent in the passive voice is the subject of the active voice. In passive voice, the subject

acts as the recipient of the action, while the agent acts as the actor.
SIMPLE PAST
The formula above applies to transitive verbs. What about intransitive verbs? Sentences

with intransitive verbs may be passive if they have a prepositional phrase.
