Raw data for SEMS
Processed data
- Arese: measured NOx

- Symphonie:
- Simulated after cat Nox using
engine specs and temperature
- Unknown: broken gps signal
- Monika Deymann speed profile
Extensive process when installing equipment on board

For getting approval and making the electronic and physical

connections many parties are involved, such as:
• The shipyard
• Company doing the maintenance
• Engine manufacturer
• Electrical systems supplies
• Fuel consumption and after treatment system supplier
• Depth measurement supplier
• Cooperation or client needs to agree in some cases
• Type of electronic signals vary

 standard electronic interface is desirable for the future

SWP 5.4: Consulting skippers
Cons:
• Advice of engine speed is too detailed
• They already apply a similar sailing strategy as advised
by the tool
• There is a vast number of practical issues that are not
implemented:
• Interaction with other traffic.
• Locks, lock times
• Schedules imposed by the office for delivery
times that do not allow efficiency considerations
Pros:
• Good working, intuitive interface.
• 1D is better than 2D, considering safety and already
optimized inner/outer bend use.
• Interesting for newer skippers with little experience
• Real time advice may not be necessary
Actions meeting Sept-2016 Rotterdam
Next steps with navigation tool, defined in September:
• Validation with measurements on German & Dutch Ships: to do or: in
progress: sailing resistance (also) to be based on on-board monitoring is
necessary to obtain reasonable accuracy.
• Planning based on arrival time, input as Rhine km as well: 2nd sprint
• easier iteration / re-planning: 2nd sprint
• Speed up model: done
• Flexible section length: not planned
• Adding Dutch Rhine(“Waal”)
• Include Upper Danube, if validation data available: received from VIADONAU,
for sprint 3… to be considered (or not planned)
• Danube water depth prediction based on Corabia gauge and (historic)
measurements on NAVRON pushers - to be considered
SWP 5.4: Pilot energy efficient navigation

We are considering the following adaptations of the tool:

• Choose arrival time in stead of speed
• Rounding the speed advice to 50 rpm steps
• This would generally mean a constant rpm advice for the entire
trip ahead…
• More information on the screen about the water way and sailing
information during the trip. Such as: local average SOG, current, depth
• Arrival time would still be updated based on deviations and possible
delays
• Possibly a new speed advice could be given, in order to meet the
original arrival time
Pilots
• Boarding the Symphonie
• This would be very efficient
• What has to be done to achieve this?
• Other suggestions?
