WALT: create an ‘applique’ artwork in the style of

traditional artwork from Pipli, Odisha (Orissa),
India
WILF:
• I can draw a design for my ‘applique’
artwork and can identify the different
sections.
• I can select the right coloured/textured
fabrics/textiles to use in my ‘applique’
artwork. • I can use a pair of scissors confidently to cut out
specific shapes including irregular shapes.
• I can follow my design to place and glue the pieces for
my ‘applique’ artwork.

Key vocabulary: Applique, fabric, texture, pattern,

colour, patch of fabric.
Appliqué is ornamental needlework in which
pieces or patch of fabric in different shapes
and patterns are sewn or stuck onto a larger
piece to form a picture or pattern. It is
commonly used as decoration, especially on
garments. The technique is accomplished
either by hand stitching or machine.
The city of Puri in Odisha (Orissa) is the home to Jagannath Temple. About 40 km away
from Puri is the village of Pipli, well-known for its ‘applique work’. The craft, locally called
Chandua, is related to the rituals and traditions of Lord Jagannath and his siblings Lord
Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.
