LECTURER : Prof. Dr. SELVIANA
NAPITUPULU. M.Hum

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Background of Research

Edmund Amidon defined teaching as “an interactive process,

primarily involving classroom talk which takes place between
teacher and pupil and occurs during certain definable activities”
in this sense, the interaction between teachers and students is
the main goal of learning during the class, so that the
effectiveness of the teaching process to students is intertwined
and sustainable.
The reason why the researcher took this title as proposal paper is
writing about literature for students or youth at this time, including
the researcher in it is to preserve or cultivate a literature in the form
of writing that can be poured into a picture book that aims to
streamline learning interest students in writing. As the researcher
got information from class 7 SMP N 7 PEMATANGSIANTAR
where the researcher was doing field practice, the researcher said
that students in that class were less interested in seeing monotonous
learning whereas, in their class, they took more notes, did
assignments and took notes again. which makes 100 sheets thick
books run out quickly so that students who make a habit of taking
notes, doing assignments and taking notes again cause boredom and
boredom. so the researcher found ideas in the form of literary
works in picture books where they can think effectively and
intelligently to express their observations in their writings.
Formulating of Research Problem
Based on the of the study above, there are several
probelm that can be identified in this proposal:

How do students change before and after using

picture books in writing Narative texts?
How do students develop in writing literature?
How do tudents study literature through picture
books?

The Scope of Research

The scope of this learning is about teaching literature

in student writing skills through picture books that
are outlined in narrative text and focus on the
narrative text which is included in several types of
text, namely, procedure, recount, description and
others.
The Significance of the Research
In the findings of this study, it is hoped that the results of the
research can contribute to students, teachers and other
researchers.
For Students
Expected to be able to help students who face difficulty in
starting to write since picture books can provide them with
inspiring story ideas.
For Teacher
Can give her/him a description of using picture books in narrative
wring instruction at the seventh grade students.
For Other Researcher
Can be a reference to other researchers who intend to conduct a
research in similar field and try to find other motivating learning
aids in writing instruction.

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW
As for what will be reviewed, literature, picture
books as media, writing skills and finally narrative
text.
Literature
Literature is the imaginative work that pictures the
human life in society which can be enjoyed,
understandable, and used by the society also.

According to findings by (Morris, 2005: 81),

"Literature introduces us to a new world of
experience which means that literature the work is a
direct part of the literary environment, the collection
of all a socially active literary work of a certain age
and social group".
PICTURE BOOKS AS A MEDIA

in this study, the media used to support the

proposal was pictures book media. Mary
Renck Jalongo stated that picture books are
colorful and beautiful pictures that attract
readers' attention to read and almost
everyone of all ages still enjoys reading
picture books because of the clear,
attractive illustrations topics, and
expressive language.
providing pictures book as a learning aid or media
to supports students before they start to write is
also useful to be apllied during writing instruction.
It means that through reading picture books or
other story books first before beginning to write,
the students will have background knowledge
about what kind of story they should write and
what kind of language thay should arrange to
describe each even their own stories. The
researcher thinks that using picture books as a
learning or aid or authentic media in writing
instruction can enhance students’ narrative skill.
Picture bokks can fasilitate students to imagine or
visualize what kind of story thay are going to
write.
Writing is one of the productive
skills. Writing is focuses on how to
produce language rather than receive.

Oshima & Houge (1997:2) state that

writing is progressive activity which
is open with the result of thinking
what the writer going to say.
Narrative Text

Narrative is a type of text that usually

contains the imagination or fiction of a
writer in the form of a fairy tale, a short
story that aims to entertain the reader. Tara
McCharty point out, is the act of telling a
story in an organized way and a written has
to include main idea, plot, character,
satisfactory description and ending.
Similiarly, Jhon Langan adds that narration
is about a story illustrating a particular time
which often relates to welt an individual
felt.
The General Structure and Language Features of Narrative
Text

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
In this research the researcher using a qualitative
research that Qualitative research involves the
studied use and collection of a variety of
empirical materials – case study, personal
experience, introspective, life story, interview,
observational, historical, interactional, and visual
texts – that describe routine and problematic
moments and meanings in individuals’ lives.
(Denzin and Lincoln 2005:2). The data of this
research were collected from the seventh grade
students of SMP N 7 Pematangsiantar.
Place (location)
The research will be conducted at SMP N 7
Pematangsiantar. The subject SMP N 7
Pematangsiantar which is located in Jln,
Sisingamangaraja No. 20, Kec. Siantar Utara.

Population
Researchers conducted research in seventh grade
which consisted of seven classes totaling 224
students as the population. However, the researcher
chose 1 class as research material, namely class 73
which had 32 student as the research sample.
Sampling

The sampling technique used by the researcher is purposive

sampling. because in the sampling using participant selection
method. because on this side students have characteristics that
the researcher wants. Which is in the definition of James H
McMillan & Sally Schumacher, op-cit. p. 125 that purposive
sampling emphasizes on relying on the judgement of the
researcher to select a sample that is representative of the
poplation or that includes subjcets whith needed characteristick.
So the researcher chose two 7th graders to do the selection,
namely 7-1 class with 7-3 through pretest in the two classes. By
looking at their final pretest scores. which in that result, class 7-
1 is superior in value compared to class 7-3. So that the class 7-
3 researcher conducts an experiment because the class requires
improvement in writing narrative texts.
Research Instrument
the researcher only used a test as a rsearch instrument. The
technique used is pre test and post test in writing the text. In the
pre-test, students were asked to write a narrative text about a
story, either from a story book they had read or from a movie
they watched. While for their post test, students were asked to
make their own stories based on their imagination of an object
with a minimum of 15 sentences in their own language.

Technique of Data Collecting

In conducting the research, the researcher conducted
data collecting in which the data was obtained from
two comparisons of class 7-1 with 7-3 by giving the
task of writing a narrative text with doing pre test
and post test.
Tehnique of Data Analysis
The last step of this research is data analisys. In analyzing the
data taken from both classes (experimental class and control
class), the author uses an analytical assessment rubic. The
analytical score adopted from Hughes was used in this study to
analyze the data related to the students writing ability test. There
are four component presented in the analytical assesmen rubic
for writing, which consist of grammar, vocabulary, mechanics.
The following tables is the analitycal assessment rubic used in
analyzing students.(Huges, 2003.p.101)

In addition the score obtained by students will be calculated

and analyzed using the rubric above with the categories listed in
below.

1. Score 86 – 100 : Category A

2. Score 70 – 85 : catogory B
3. Score 55 – 69 : category C
4. Score 10 – 50 : category
