Op-Amp
A high gain differential amplifier
with single output.
A voltage amplifying device.
This is an amplifier which is used to
perform many operations such as
addition, subtraction, differentiation
and integration etc., giving its name
operational amplifier.
Many components such as resistor , Fig 1 Operational Amplifier
capacitor and diode etc. are used to https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/semiconduct
perform the different operations. ors/chpt-8/introduction-operational-amplifiers/

6
Open Loop Configuration of Op-Amp
In open loop configuration there is no connection between input and
output i.e there is no feedback.

There are three types of open loop configuration :

a) The Differential Amplifier

b) The Inverting amplifier

c) The Non-inverting amplifier

7
Open Loop Configuration of Op-Amp
a) The Differential Amplifier: Input signals
vin1 and vin2 are applied to the terminals
of op-amp.
• The source resistance Rin1 and Rin2 are
normally negligible compared to the
input resistance Ri.
So
v1 = vin1 and v2 = vin2.
vo = Ad (vin1 – vin2 ) where, Ad is the open Fig 2 Differential Amplifier

Open Loop Configuration of Op-Amp
b) The Inverting Amplifier:
•If the input is applied to only inverting
terminal and non-inverting terminal is
grounded then it is called inverting
amplifier.
V1= 0 and V2 = Vin , Vo= -AdVin
•The negative sign indicates that the
output voltage is out of phase with
respect to input 180 °. Fig 3 Inverting Amplifier

Open Loop Configuration of Op-Amp
c) The Non-Inverting Amplifier:
•If the input is applied to only non-
inverting terminal and inverting
terminal is grounded then it is called
non-inverting amplifier.
V1= Vin and V2 = 0 , Vo= + AdVin
•This means that the input voltage is
amplified by Ad and there is no phase

reversal at the output.

10
Closed Loop Configuration of Op-Amp
In closed loop configuration there is a connection between input and output
i.e there is feedback.

There are four types of closed loop configuration :

a) Inverting Amplifier with negative feedback (Amplifier)

b) Non-Inverting Amplifier with negative feedback (Amplifier)

c) Inverting Amplifier with positive feedback (Oscillator)

d) Non-Inverting Amplifier with positive feedback (Oscillator)

11
Closed Loop Configuration of Op-Amp
a) Inverting Amplifier with Negative
Feedback :
•There is feedback at inverting terminal
that’s why it is known as negative
feedback.
•Because of the phase inversion, the
output signal is 180 deg out – of – phase Fig 5 Inverting Amplifier with Negative
with the input signal. Feedback

Closed Loop Configuration of Op-Amp
b) Non-Inverting Amplifier with Negative
Feedback :
•There is feedback at inverting terminal
that’s why it is known as negative
feedback.
•Since the feedback voltage is at the
inverting input, it opposes the input
voltage at the non – inverting input Fig 6 Non-Inverting Amplifier with Negative
terminals, and hence the feedback is Feedback
