The purpose of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) authorizes
the Central Government which aims to support and promote the
OVERVIEW management, protection, enhancement and wise use of the
environment.

CENTRAL GOVERMENT
The Central Government shall have the power to take all such measures as it deems necessary or
expedient for the purpose of protecting and improving the quality of the environment in
coordination with the State Governments.

Key features of the Act include:
•Advising Central Government of Air and Air Pollution related issues
•Research about the causes and impact of Air Pollution

AIR ACT
•Spread awareness to stop air pollution
•To establish central and State Boards and empower them to monitor air quality
and control pollution
•The National Air Monitoring Programme (NAMP) has been established
with objectives to determine the present air quality status and trends and to
control and regulate pollution from industries and other sources to meet the air
quality standards.

How can air pollution harm the environment?

• Air pollution can lead to global warming, smog, respiratory problems,


change in climate and affect the overall biodiversity and ecosystem

Key features of the Act include:
•The Act vests regulatory authority in State Pollution Control Boards to
establish and enforce effluent standards for factories

•A Central Pollution Control Board performs the same functions for Union ACT
Territories and formulates policies and coordinates activities of different State
Boards
•The Act grants power to SPCB and CPCB to test equipment and to take the
sample for the purpose of analysis
•The act provides penalties for the defaulters of duties and powers

Key features of the Act include:
WILDLIFE
• Act provides for the protection of the country’s wild animals, birds, and
plant species, in order to ensure environmental and ecological security
PROTECTI
• Act lays down restrictions on hunting many animal species. ON ACT
• provides for licenses for the sale, transfer, and possession of some wildlife
species.
• National Board for Wildlife was constituted as a statutory organization
under the provisions of this Act.

1. Sanctuaries - is a place of refuge where injured, abandoned, and abused PROTECTI
wildlife is allowed to live in peace in their natural environment without any
human intervention

2. National Parks- are the areas that are set by the government to conserve
the natural environment
- more restrictions as compared to a wildlife sanctuary, no
human activity is allowed
3. Conservation Reserves- SG may declare an area (particularly those
adjacent to sanctuaries or parks) as conservation reserves after consulting
with local communities

5. Tiger Reserves- declared on the recommendations of the National Tiger
Conservation Authority

Key features of the Act include:
FOREST
• Under this Act, the whole power is in the hand of the Central government to
carry out the laws of this Act.
CONSERVATI
• Under this Act, an advisory committee may be formed for advising the ON ACT
Central government in matters related to forest conservation.
• To protect the forest, its flora, fauna and other diverse ecological
components. To protect the integrity, territory and individuality of the
forests
• To protect the forests and prevent deforestation that will lead to land erosion
and subsequent degradation of the land. 
• To prevent the loss of forest biodiversity.
• To prevent the conversion of forests into agricultural lands, or grazing lands,
or building of business or residential units.
