Tools, Materials, and Equipment

• Tools are permanent which means you can use them


without them being consumed and replaced
immediately. Tools are hand-held materials which
means you can only use them using your hands. They
are light and should be maintained and cleaned from
time to time. Tools are also called implements .

• Materials are cosmetics which means it involves the


use of consumable treatments to restore and
improve a person’s physical appearance. Materials
are consumable meaning they are commodities that
are used quickly and should be replaced from time to
time. Materials are also called consumables .

• Equipment are the things which are durable,


permanent machinery used for a particular purpose.
This means equipment may last for years if you are
going to take good care of them and maintain them
properly. These are the things that rely on the users’
abilities to maintain and take care of them.

FUNCTIONS AND USES OF THE TOOLS
I. Used in manicure and
pedicure
Nail Cutter
● Used in trimming or
cutting long nails.
Nail File
● Used to bevel and shape
the free edges of the
nails using the coarse or
rough side of the file and
using the finer side to
shape the ends of the
nails.
Nail Buffer
● Used for smoothening
and polishing the nails.
Cuticle Nail Pusher
● Used in pushing back
the nails and cuticles.
Cuticle Nail Nipper
● Used in cutting the
cuticles.
Cuticle Scissors
● Used to cut excess
cuticles.
Emery Board
● It is a wooden, sand-
paper like stick with two
sides--one rough, one
fine side--to smoothen,
grind, and shape the
edges of the nails.
Orangewood Stick
● It has pointed and
rounded ends used in
removing excess nail
polish.
Manicure Nail Brush
● A plastic small brush
with nylon bristles used
for cleaning nail dirt and
residues of nails
surface.
Pedicure Nail Brush
● Used to remove
cosmetics and to clean
the nails.
Manicure Bowl
● A small, round and cup-
like container used for
soaking the fingers to
soften the nails and
cuticles of the hand.
Foot Spa Basin
● This is a large
rectangular container
used for soaking the
fingers to soften the
nails and cuticles of the
feet.
Manicure Tray
● A flat container where
all the important tools
and materials are
placed for the easy
access of the
manicurist.

● Used to remove and
soften the calluses.
Foot File
● This is made of metal or
sand-paper, with rough
or coarse side on one
side to remove the
calluses, and fine side to
smoothen the feet.
Pumice Stone
● It is a volcanic stone from
frothy lava which was
solidified to form porous
rock used to remove
calluses, dry and rough
skin of the feet.
Mixing Bowl
● A small, round and cup-
like container used for
mixing aroma oils and
other fluids for the
hand and foot spa.

● It is an organic solvent
used to remove or
dissolve the old nail
polish applied on the
nails.
Solvent ● It is a substance
used to thin out the nail
polish when it has
thickened.
Cuticle Remover ● It is a
kind of liquid used to
soften nail cuticles and
prepare them to be cut.
Benzalkonium Chloride ● It is
a yellow-white powder
prepared in an aqueous
solution used as surface
disinfectant and topical
antiseptic. It kills
microorganisms and
inhibits their future growth.
Base Coat ● It is a clear polish
applied on the nail plate before
the colored nail polish to
smoothen the surface of the
nails as well as to maintain
healthier nails.
Nail Polish ● It is a lacquer used to
apply on fingernails or toenails
to decorate and protect the nail
plate.
Nail Hardener ● It is used to
protect the nails from chipping,
peeling, and splitting.
Top coat ● It is a clear nail polish
applied to the nails after the
colored polish to protect it from
scratches and chips. It helps
make the nail appear shiny and
also make the nails harder.
Quick Dry ● It is a liquid
applied to a colored nail
polish to dry faster.
Cuticle Oil ● It is a mixture of
fats and waxes containing
lanolin and petroleum base
to soften and lubricate the
skin around the nails.
Cotton ● It is a soft white downy
fiber for dabbing or cleaning
the nails and removing nail
polish. ● It is a tool used for
acetone, and other liquid
materials to apply on the nails.
Hand Towel ● It is an absorbent
cloth used in drying the hands.
Manicure Pillow ● It is a hand
cushion that helps a client to
keep her hands steady and
relaxed.
Toe Nail Separator ● It is a soft
material where toes are
inserted to keep them apart to
prevent a freshly painted toenail
from staining another toe.

Foot Soak ● It is an herbal
blend to relax, energize,
soothe, and deodorize
the feet.
Foot Scrub ● It is a mixture
of natural ingredients to
keep feet soft, smooth,
and moisturized.
Foot Blush ● It is a liquid
spray that contains
peppermint and alpha
hydroxyl acids derived from
fruits that whisks away
dead skin cells, deodorizes,
and softens the feet, giving
it a pinkish glow after use.
Hand and Foot Lotion
● Used to soften the skin.

Bleaching Soap
● Used to whiten the skin.
Cling wrap ● It is a thin
plastic film used for
sealing the paraffin
during a foot or hand
spa.
Towel ● An absorbent cloth
to dry hands and feet.

agent, such as heat,
radiation, or a chemical,
that destroys,
neutralizes, or prevents

an agent that reduces or
prevents the
multiplication of
microorganisms.
Wet Sanitizer ● It is a
substance or preparation
for killing germs.
First Aid Kit ● Used for
giving first aid when
there are incidents in a
salon.
Garbage bins and bags
● Plastic disposable bags
used for maintaining the
cleanliness inside the
salon. Proper segregation
should be implemented
in any establishments.

the hands.

● It is an electronic gadget
used for soaking,
bathing and massaging
the feet during a foot
spa.
Chairs ● These are seats
with back support which
have four legs and some
have rests for the arms.
Manicurist’s Chair/Stool
● This is the adjustable
upholstered seat fitted
over a metal or chrome.
Foot Spa Stool
● A stool used under the
legs so that the client
will feel comfortable
and relaxed during the
treatment.
Manicure Table ● It is a
furniture specially designed
for giving manicures.
Usually it has a laminated
plastic surface and a drawer
for storing materials. It is
often fitted with ball casters
for easy mobility.
Sterilizer ● It is an equipment
in a salon used for
sterilizing metal
implements to kill
microorganisms.
Timer ● It is a device that can
be preset to start or stop
something at a given time.
