BIODIVERSITY & THE HEALTHY
SOCIETY
BIO- life

DIVERSITY-the practice/ quality of including or involving people from a range of different

social & ethnic backgrounds & of different genders/ sexual orientation

BIODIVERSITY-the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem like

-the variety of animals, plants, fungi or even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our
natural world

-each of these species & organisms work together in ecosystems, like an intricate web to
maintain balance & support life

-support human & societal needs including food & nutrition, security, energy, development of
medicines & pharmaceuticals & fresh H2O which together under pin good health

-it also support economic opportunities & leisure activities

TYPES OF
BIODIVERSIT
Y
GENETIC DIVERSITY

-basically the variety of species

expressed at the genetic level by
each individual in a species
-no 2 individuals belonging to the
same species are exactly similar
SPECIES DIVERSITY

-biodiversity observed within

community
-it stands for the number &
distribution of species
ECOLOGICAL DIVERSITY

-the diversity observed among the

ecosystems in a particular regions
-different ecosystems like
mangroves, rain forests, desserts
show a great variety of life forms
residing in them
IMPORTANCE OF
BIODIVERSITY
-all these diversities help in
maintaining the correct balance of
nature but gradually over the years
there has been a major loss in the
biodiversity across the globe
A. BIODIVERSITY ENSURES HEALTH & FOOD
SECURITY
It underpins global nutrition & food security
Millions of species work together to provide us with a large array of
fruits, vegetables & animal products essential to healthy & balanced
diet
But unfortunately the simplification of diets, processed foods have
led to poor quality diets
Result 1/3 of the world population suffers from micronutrient
deficiencies
B. BIODIVERSITY HELPS FIGHT DISEASE

For example 1st plants are essential

25% of drug used in modern medicine are
derived from rainforest plants
70% of CA drugs are natural/ synthetic products
inspired by nature
C. BIODIVERSITY BENEFITS BUSINESS

Many businesses are at risk due to increasing loss

Coral reefs are essential to tourism in some parts
of the world but they’re disappearing
D. BIODIVERSITY PROVIDES LIVELIHOOD
Humans derive approximately 125T of value
from natural ecosystems each year. Globally 3 out
of 4 jobs are dependent on H2O while the
agricultural sector employs over 60% of the world
working poor
Ecosystems must be restored & protected not
only for the good of nature but also to the
communities that depend on them
E. BIODIVERSITY PROTECT US
Biodiversity makes the earth habitable
Biodiverse eco systems provide nature based solutions that buffer us
from natural disaster such as floods & storms, filter our H2O &
regenerated our soils
The clearance of over 35% of the world mangroves for human
activities has put people and their homes at risk from floods & sea
level rise
Protecting & restoring natural ecosystems are vital in fighting climate
change
WAYS TO PRESERVE BIODIVERSITY

01. Support local farms & healthy society

Save the bees

02.

03. Plant local flowers, fruits & vegetables

WAYS TO PRESERVE BIODIVERSITY
