This is called “LIGHT SCATTERING”

How could this happen?

properties of colloids.

Purpose and Benefits

To understand a light scattering phenomenon from the tyndall effect, we can

do a simple experiment.

Result and Discussion

Mixture condition Light beam

No Sample
(Clear / Turbid) (transmitted / Scattered / not transmitted)
1. Water + Salt Clear Transmitted
2. Water + milk powder Turbid Scattered
3. Water + Flour Turbid Not transmitted
1 When a light source is being shined through a mixture of water and salt, which the particle size of salt is < 1
nm, we can not see the difference between the solute and the solvent. So, the light is transmitted. Since salt is
dissolved in water and formed a true solution. So that this mixture can not shows the tyndall effect.

2
A mixture of water and milk powder, the particle size of milk powder is at the average of 80-100nm, so the
light is scattered. At the first glance, our eyes will see that the milk is dissolved in the water. But, what
happened in the mixture is that the milk particles are suspended in the water, and formed a colloid. So, in this
mixture we can see that the light is scattered in different directions.

3 A mixture of water and flour, the particles of flour can be seen floating in the water. The particles are large
enough to block the light. It has 100 nm of particle size, and this mixture is called a suspension, and the light
can not passes through the suspension. Hence, the tyndall effect did not occur.
Conclusion and Recomendation
• The mixture of water and salt formed a solution • To see the scattered and transmitted light
and did not shows a light beam. The light was clearly, we recommend to use a dark
transmitted completely. Tyndall effect did not background since the light and color of solution
occur in this solution. is bright.
• The mixture of water and milk formed a colloid • To make a suspension, it is better to use a dark
characteristic. The light was scattered, so the matter (powder). so we can see the light
tyndall effect occurs blocked clearly, for example: soil.
• The mixture of water and flour formed a • Use a brighter torch, to make a distinct result in
suspension characteristic. The light was blocked the experiment.
by a large particle of the flour, so the light did not
transmitted. No tyndal effect occurs in this
mixture.
• The tyndall effect only occurs in a mixture of
water and milk.
