What is a Computer?
• A person who calculates (1640s)

• Calculating machine (1897)

• an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically

in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a
variable program.
Categories of Computer
• Mainframe computers

• Microcomputers

• Minicomputers

• Supercomputers

• Wearable computers
Mainframe Computers
• High-performance computers with
large amounts of memory and
processors that process billions of
simple calculations and
transactions in real time.
• E-Commerce
• Banking
• Health Care
• Military
• Academics and Research
Microcomputers
• Electronic device with a
microprocessor as its central
processing unit (CPU).

• Two classifications of
Microcomputers:
• Personal Computers
• Portable Computers
Minicomputers
• Smaller, less expensive, and less
powerful than a mainframe or
supercomputer, but more
expensive and powerful than a
personal computer
Supercomputers
• Computer that is millions of times
faster than a desktop PC and
capable of crunching the world’s
most complex scientific problems.
Wearable Computers
• Computer worn on the body.
• Allow users to work, communicate,
entertain right along ensuring
mobility and hands-free access to
