What is a honeydew? • Honeydew melon – also known as honey melon - is a fruit that belongs to the muskmelon species. • Think of something such as a watermelon: Honeydews have a high water content • Honeydew melons originate from a member of Cucurbitaceae family which consists of other fruits and melons. • Squash • Cucumbers • Zucchinis • Other melons Physical Appearance of Honeydews • Honeydew melons are perfectly spherical with a smooth & slightly waxy, cream-colored skin. • Inside there is something known as “fruit bears” which a deliciously sweet and juicy pale green flesh. • In the internal core, it contains a cluster of small, pale seeds at its core. • When ripe, it is firm, thin and smooth. Average taste and aroma Odor: • Pleasant • Sweet • Honeydew melon with waxy and oily nuance • Musky scent Flavor: • Heavy • Waxy • Fatty mouth feel • Mild, yet, sweet and has a juicy, succulent flavor • If one has ever smelt a watermelon, it is a similar case with this fruit as they contain organic compounds Honeydews Origin Honeydew initially is thought to be of Middle Eastern or Western Asian native descent; but the exact origin is unknown.

Honeydew melons were discovered in 2400 BCE in
Ancient Egypt
In Ontario, honeydew is grown in Southwest region;
which require a hot long summer. Honeydews did not make its way towards Europe until the 15th century.
After passing decades, it made its way towards North
America. Where are Honeydews grown? • Honeydews are grown in Southwest, Ontario. • These melons typically require a long, hot summer • Southwest Ontario is perfect for this case as it provides humid continental climate. • Other types of melons are also grown in these climatic conditions. Variety of Honeydews • There are 2 distinctive honeydew that are based off color: White honeydew melons: • Smooth • White Skinned • Pale • Green Fleshed Yellow Honeydew Melons: • Gold Yellow Skin • Green Flesh Growing Seasons and Harvesting Dates • Honeydew melons mature in 65 to 100 days, depending on the cultivar. • Various types of honey melon can be grown during the spring and fall. Based on zones, the seeds can be planted outdoors on days of: • May 1-15 • April 1-15 2 ways to keep it fresh & what must be done to make it fresh 1. Starting at the top, slice away the rind in strips 2. Cut all the way around the fruit, 3. leaving no bitter rind on the melon flesh. 4. Finish by slicing away the remaining round top of the rind. 1.Slice the honeydew into 1″ chunks and spread out on
a baking sheet. 2.Put it in the freezer for 4-6 hours until frozen. 3.Once frozen, put the chunks in the blender with the lemon juice and sweetener. 4.You may need to add a couple tablespoons of water to help it to start blending. 5.If you don’t have a high-powered blender, you can make this in a food processor. 6.Blend until smooth. 7.Put it back into the freezer for another 30 minutes until it sets.
