Resume and Cover Letter

What is Resume?
• A resume is a summary (usually one page) listing of
one's employment, education, and skills or
accomplishments. This is a key part of your portfolio.
• The document is used in applying for a new position,
usually in the professional sector. The term is
common in the US and other western countries. In
the UK, they use the word CV (curriculum vitae or
vita) instead of resume.
• A cover letter is a brief opening letter that specifies
what the application is about and draws the
attention of the employer to your attached resume.
• Although just one or two pages long, your resume
reflects who you are and communicates to a
potential employer your professional skills and
experiences.
• To be successful and to stand our among the many
competing candidates, your resume should be able
grab the attention of employers and recruiters.
• It should demonstrate why you are an excellent
candidate for the job advertised. The resume
should be able to convey your current capabilities
and future potentials.
• It should be able to win the interview to proceed
further in the job search process.
• Before you get started, it's important to know
that resume writing has changed considerably
in recent years. Because of fierce competition
for jobs and other factors, there's now a much
stronger emphasis on marketing.
Creating Resumes
• Create a resume customized to your employment goal or
the particular job you are applying for. Every position may
require certain changes in the resume you prepare. It
should fit the position advertised, or solicited.
• Remember, your resume should stand our among others so
it can win a job interview, and later, hopefully a job. In
terms of format, resume can be chronological or functional.
• Although a chronological resume is easy to follow, it is not
an ideal format for those who have gaps in their
employments records or who have changed jobs too
frequently.
• Functional resumes organize information
around skills rather than past experiences,
presented chronologically.
• Since college students do not have an extensive
experience or a steady career record yet,
functional resumes can be more effective for
them.
• As far as possible, the length of a resume should
be limited to one page.

WHAT IS A
COVER
LETTER?
A COMPLEMENT TO YOUR
RESUME

• Cover letters are a narrative complement

t o your resume.
• A brief one page document that helps
expand on the experiences you showcased
in your resume.
• Highlights your motivations in
applying for the position and why you
want to work with this specific
organization.
• Showcases your personality and
values.
PURPOSE OF A
COVER LETTER
Cover letters should highlight your academic,
professional, and personal qualifications for the
position to which you are applying.

It should not be a restatement of your resume.

Instead you should select certain experiences to
highlight to the employer. You might weave
experiences together, telling how one experience
led to another. You might tell a story from one or
two experiences that bring depth and detail not
covered in your resume.
PURPOSE OF A
COVER LETTER
A compelling cover letter answers "Why you?" and "Why
them?"
- Why you: Focus their attention on your most relevant and
compelling qualifications. What value will you bring to the
organization? (Not what you want or what you can gain.)
- Why them: Be sure to include a sentence to a full paragraph
on why you want to work with this particular organization.
Talk about them. Be sure to match your tone to the
organization, i.e. corporate banking tends to be more formal
than marketing or nursing. (Don’t confuse formal with
professional. All letters should be written with a professional
voice and focus. Do not use slang, abbreviations, or a casual
tone.)

Cover letters that are just about you are dry and expected. To
catch their attention, MAKE A CONNECTION.
Questions for the exam:
• Write a job application for the post of
Communication Officer to the HR Manager,
Patanjali Gram Udyog, Nepal. Prepare a CV to
be attached with the cover letter
