Correct lubrication is critical to bearing performance.
Lubrication provides a thin film between the contact areas
in a bearing to reduce friction, dissipate heat and inhibit
corrosion on balls and raceways. The lubricant will affect
maximum running speed and temperature, torque level,
noise level and, ultimately, bearing life.  
The purpose of the bearing lubrication is to cover the rolling
and sliding contact surfaces with a thin layer of oil to avoid
direct metal to metal contact.

LUBRICATION IN BEARINGS
Friction is the resistance of movement between two forces. No matter
how smooth a metal is, in the microscopic view, two metal surfaces
will appear jagged and rough with many peaks and valleys. When a
machinery is in motion, these peaks and valley will resist motion of
the metal and thus results in friction.

Too much friction between two metal surfaces will generate more
heat. Lubricants are used to allow these surfaces to slide smoothly and
thus reduce friction and heat

LUBRICATION IN BEARINGS
Viscosity play a big role in proper lubrication in the bearings. High
Viscosity lubricants are used in high temperature applications because
it has too be thick enough to maintain the film between moving parts.
In low temperature applications, low viscosity oils are used as they
flow more easily at low temperatures and can reach moving parts
faster than high viscosity lubricants.

Therefore, Application and temperatures must be considered.

Lubricants, also function as a cooling machine
parts especially in fast moving parts. The
lubricants carries the heat away from the
moving parts and function as a coolant.
