Additional tips for face to face counseling
How to connect through effective body language
Don’t fold your arms across your chest. That sends the message “I don’t
want to get close.”
Maintain steady but soft eye contact. If you avert your gaze, it says you’re
insecure; but staring for too long is intimidating. Eye contact should convey
your confidence that also needs to be comfortable for the enquirer.
Invite the enquirer into your thought process. Share your ideas and
welcome their comments . Don’t just brush them off.
Don’t make distracting movements like making unnecessary hand
movements which usually turn the other person off.
Speak slowly and clearly in an interesting way and tone which breaks the
monotony.
Convey emotions through facial expressions that makes you seem much
more genuine.
Match your pace with the enquirer’s pace. If the person is slow and
hesitant then allow yourself to be slowed down. Similarly if they are quick
and lively then present yourself likewise. 13
Tips for Telephonic Counseling
The greeting is the key, it sets the tone and style of the whole
interaction.
Smile as you pick up the phone.
Be courteous and seek permission before you start your
conversation.
Speak clearly, slowly and in a cheerful, professional voice.
Be respectful, enthusiastic, natural and attentive while
conversing.
Use your normal tone while answering a call. Avoid speaking
loudly or too softly over the phone.
It is a good habit to pronounce an information back to the
enquirer during jotting down address, phone number etc., to avoid
miscommunications.
14
More Tips for Telephonic Counseling
Speak relevantly and briefly.
Try to quickly catch the specific requirements.
Stress on job prospects of the course and the other
benefits.
Focus on making the enquirer visit your centre.
Do not reveal course fees.
Do not eat or drink while handling a telephonic enquiry
Never be rude to the caller.
Never leave a person on hold for more than a few seconds
as the caller may become upset and hang up.
