Classroom/School
Practices
PERENNIALISM
Educational philosophy which is believed to follow a
traditional and conservative belief.
Perennialists view education as a concept and follow
relevant and meaningful ideas.
Stresses the importance of truth and reasoning.
Focuses on personal development and what is
important to people everywhere.
PERENNIALISM
Taught through structured study. Students learn from
reading and analyzing pieces of history by well-known
writers and philosophers.
Believed to be taught through rigorous intellectual
discipline and strong behavior control.
PERENNIALISM IN THE
CLASSROOM
Extremely structured and traditional
Lots of lecturing and makes sure that the correct point
is getting across to the students.
The questions asked have only one correct answer and
things need to be put to money
PERENNIALISM IN THE
CLASSROOM
Schools should spend more time teaching about
concepts and explaining how they are meaningful to
students.
Perennialist classroom are centered on the teachers.
They use methods of teaching that it best suited for
disciplining the minds of the students.
ORDERLY SEATING
Orderly seating arrangements are favored.
Desk are usually arranged in rows and students are
seated in alphabetical order.
This is logical and systematic in the eyes of a
perennialist.
ORDERLY SEATING
A perennial would not bother learning the names of the
students due to the fact that it forms an environment of
equality between teachers and students.
GROUPING OF STUDENTS
Perennialists favor grouping of students by ability
Differences among students should be recognized and
the higher achieving students should be grouped with
students on that the same level.
WHY SHOULD
PERENNIALISM BE
APPLIED IN TEACHING
The focus of Perennialism as a Philosophy
of Education is for personal development
of the students or learners through
inculcating in them the principles that have
been passed from generation to generation.
These principles were formulated by the
great thinkers and philosophers of the past
like Aristotle, Socrates and Plato and are
likely to make one develop a good
personality and morality if learned and
applied in life
These principles that have been learned
will be so useful in later life especially
when these learners begin to appreciate the
need to be educated of the facts and
knowledge regarding the physical world
with the end of getting employed.
Applying Perennialism will definitely set,
not only the mind, but the whole aspect of
the learner welcome and better understand
all the ideas, knowledge or facts that will
be given to him that he considers
necessary.
ON WHAT SUBJECTS OR
TOPICS PERENNIALISM
CAN BE APPLIED?
Perennialists stress a strong liberal arts
curriculum that includes subjects as
philosophy, mathematics, history, geography,
political science, sociology, theology,
languages and literature, physical and life
science, and the fine arts and humanities.
If these subjects are highly studied and
mastered, then you completed necessary
training for a well-developed intellect. A
combination of all these subjects construct
a well-rounded curriculum.
