OBJECTIVES
 Flashlights are used as a light source outdoors, in places
without permanently installed lighting, during power
outages, or when a portable light source is needed
 LED flashlights are brighter and more efficient flashlights
than regular flashlights
 The aim is to construct a LED flash circuit using unijunction
transistor(UJT)
 It can be used in  warning devices, safety blinkers etc..
 UJT 2N 2646 is used as a simple oscillator
CIRCUIT DESIGN - 1
with the oscillating components resistor
R1and capacitor C2.
 The LED is connected between the base2
(B2) of the UJT and the ground. Resistor
R2 restricts current through the UJT as
well as LED.
 At power on, capacitor C2 charges
through resistor R1 and when it fully
charges, emitter of UJT forward biases
and current flows into the base. LED then
lights.
 The discharge of C2 is followed by its
charging again creating an oscillating
cycle so that LED flashes.
 Capacitor C1 charges via Resistors R1 &
CIRCUIT DESIGN - 2 R2, As soon as the voltage level across the
capacitor exceeds the firing threshold of
the UJT, it fires and discharges C1 though
the LED.
 If R2 is adjusted too low, the unijunction
transistor will not reset itself and the LED
will light continuously.
 The 1Ω resistor is a shunt for monitoring
LED current , it is not required for circuit
operation.
 R4 is not absolutely necessary, but it tends
to reduce peak battery current when the
device fires.
PROPOSAL
 This project is very useful if we increase the S.no Component Quantity

blinking rate and brightness of LED

1 Capacitor 100µF 3
 The blinking rate is determined by the
2 Resistor (1.2K Ω,100 Ω, 1 Ω, 12K 1
resistor and capacitor connected to the Ω, 470 Ω), Variable Resistor –
10K Ω
emitter of UJT
 The LED brightness level is decided by the 3 UJT – 2N 2646, 2N 4871 1
4 2
resistor connected to the base of UJT Breadboard
5 LED 2
 In this circuit UJT acts as relaxation 6 Battery 9-12 v 2
oscillator. So, UJT requires a low value of 7 Connecting wires
triggering current.
