1. What is conjugation?
2. Why do we need to conjugate?
3. What is an AR verb?
4. What is an ER verb?
5. What is an IR verb?
Conjugating means changing the form of a verb (the way the verb looks/is spelt) so
that it agrees with the subject and tense of the sentence.

Eg we cannot say “I to swim” we must say “I swim” to show that swimming is an

activity that I do in the present tense.

We conjugate to ensure that there is subject-verb agreement in our sentences. Without

subject-verb agreement, our sentences are incorrect and do not make sense.

Eg – I to swim yesterday. 😕 ❌
I swam yesterday. 🙂 ✅
PRESENT TENSE

The present tense is used to describe things that are happening or things
that happen in the present. In Spanish, the present tense can also be used
to talk about things that are going to happen in the near future.

Eg. Yo hablo inglés. - I speak English.
Mañana hablo con la profesora. – Tomorrow I’ll speak to the teacher.

Remember in Spanish, we have 3 types of verbs – AR, ER, and IR verbs.

AR verbs – end in AR before they are conjugated.

ER verbs – end in ER before they are conjugated.
IR verbs - end in IR before they are conjugated.

The verb endings for regular verbs in the present are as
follows:
Subject pronoun AR ER IR
Yo (I) O O O
Tú (you – singular, As Es Es
informal)
Él/ ella/ (he/she) A E E
Usted (you – singular, A E E
formal)
Nosotros (we) Amos Emos Imos
Vosotros (you - informal, Áis Éis Ís
plu)
Ellos/ellas (they) An En En
Ustedes (you – formal, An En En
plu)
To conjugate a verb in the present tense,we:
1. Put the subject or subject pronoun
2. Remove the ar/er/ir that is found at the end of the infinitive verb
3. Add the ending that corresponds with the subject/subject pronoun

Eg Hablar
Step 1: Put the subject Pronoun Step 2: Remove the Step 3: add the
end (ar) corresponding
ending
Yo (I) habl hablo
Tú (you – singular, informal) habl hablas
Él/ ella/ (he/she) habl habla
Usted (you – singular, formal) habl habla

Nosotros (we) habl hablamos

Vosotros (you - informal, plu) habl habláis

Ellos/ellas (they) habl hablan

Ustedes (you – formal, plu) habl hablan
