EMOTIONAL

INTELLIGENCE ON THE
JOB
By: Grace Rangel
What is Emotional Intelligence (EI)?

“Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize,

understand, use and manage emotions– moods, feelings
and attitudes.”
The Term, Origin, and more.

■ Don Goleman is responsible for the

gravitation towards the term in the 90’s.
■ There is many books talking about his
renounced analyst on the term though the
idea itself is centuries old.
■ Dan Goleman believed EI is heritable but
it can be learned.
■ It has been argued that Dan Goleman’s
standpoints are problematic, but I believe
there is some useful information when
pertaining to EI in the workplace.
Why Does it Matter in the Workplace?
• You understand criticism on work
performance is not personal
• You do not let conflict get the best of
you
• Strong dynamics within co-workers/
superiors create safe effective
workplaces
• You connect with clients in a personable
yet professional manner
• Self management with time, workload,
and self care
PERSONAL
EXPERIENCE WITH EQ
IN WORKPLACE
Being an effective Licesenced Massage Therapist and business owner requires a high EI. I
am not only the service provider, but the workload behind the service. This alone requires
self regulation to ensure I am up to date on all bookwork and organized.
Examples

■ Establish boundaries with clients th while providing personable safe experience. These
boundaries include appropriate mannerisms and conversation during the session. Social
Awareness
■ Being ethical about my clientele and the modalities I specialize in. Legally, I am
allowed to massage anyone, but if I am not knowledgeable with their disorder or not
capable of providing effective treatment, I will not. Self-Management
■ Being a business owner, I have to manage my own books, and colloborate with other
professionals for my marketing and designs. Relationship Management
