Meaning of communalism

• Communalism is a system where land as the means of production is


collectively owned and used by members of the society.
• It is the administration of the political and economic system through
autonomous communities.
• Communalism is derived from the word ‘commune’ or ‘community’.
• According to Karl Marx, a German philosopher (1813-1883),
communalism was the first stage in the history of development of
mankind.
How communalism was practised.

• Under communalism, the entire community collectively owned the land


and every member of the community could use it to satisfy his needs.
• As practised in China, communalism is a system of organising farmers’
cooperatives into villages, known as communes, for effective production
and distribution of farm products
Features of communalism

• There is collective ownership of land.


• There is also collective ownership and responsibility for all means of
production and distribution.
• Each member of the community contributes to the development of the
society.
• The interest of individuals and groups is protected.
• Each member of the society contributes to the decision-making process.
