Psychology of the Lying Person

🠶 In the psychology of lying base on what I’ve learned is that the deception is
being detected where the reaction of our body function is influenced by our
mental state which means it’s a reflection that what we consciously or beyond
consciously think resulted into physiological changes.
🠶 For example, if you were told to answer a question and instead of telling the
truth, you tell a lie because the question is too personal and you wouldn’t want
to be known by them, so by that situation we will be able to identify if a
person lie if the emotion is shown through psychological which is the blood
pressure, pulse rate, breathing, and perspiration is showing deception through
physiological fluctuation.
One of the underlying psychology:

Fear of detection must be experienced by the subject; otherwise, no physiological

changes will occur.

THEORY OF POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION

🠶 The Theory of Polygraph Examination detects deception through physiological changes by mental
consciousness, why because ones a normal person’s receptor receives a threatening question and has
been stimuli so there would be emotion as a result and then eventually our body reacts through which
and that determined as Physiological change.
🠶 Base on the theory Autonomic Nervous System is the regulating mechanism inside our body, ones
one of our sense receive threat it’ll send the signal through it which activates its two (2) division;
🠶 First, Sympathetic Nervous System division wherein it’s like an immediate reaction of our nerve cells
of brain that we cannot control and is known as “hypothalamus”, it’s Like our body develops defense
mechanism, example when there is emergencies, a burning gas tank inside your house that is
continuously spreading, there would be of course an adrenaline rush where it most needed when
there’s a sense of emergency which allow us to have this such reaction.
🠶 The Second Division is Parasympathetic Nervous System which the opposite of sympathetic, its role
is to maintain the balance of normal body function.
TRIPOD FOUNDATIONS OF POLYGRAPH TECHNIQUE

This tripod foundation of polygraph technique are the ways of how to detect deceit, a premise that would show
signs of deception either by Mechanical, Physiological, and Psychological.
Mechanical Leg Basic Premise
🠶 It explains as Polygraphs can create graphic records that contain reliable information about the
subject's physiological responses.

Physiological Leg Basic Premise

🠶 The Physiological changes that can be recorded and identified only after a specific nervous system
component is stimulated, and from which that stimulation can be reliably diagnosed

Psychological Leg Basic Premise

🠶 The involuntary mental and emotional processes of the individual who is consciously attempting
concealment of deception, especially if that individual has something at stake and the prevailing
circumstances lead him to believe that exposure to detection is quite possible through undesirable
reactions, stimulate the specific nervous system component whose stimulation can thus be diagnosed.

GENERAL PURPOSES OF USING POLYGRAPH

🠶 According to what is being explained, the general purpose of a polygraph is to obtain a validity and
reliability truth from someone; it could be useful not only for criminal purposes, but also for person or
institutional purposes such as personnel screening and or medical measurement that is provided in the
module.

🠶 Its purpose is to elicit valid truthfulness from a person, such as how an employer would know that a
person applying for a job is deserving of their trust; of course, if they need to have a direct perspective
of hiring a trusted employee, they may consider using polygraph.
Examples
🠶 Security Risk- Leakage of Information, Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence
• If an information leaked, a person did it, can be traced by polygraph, by examining him/her.

🠶 Criminal Law Infraction- Murder, Robbery, Theft, Rape etc.

• In this type of purpose is where polygraph most likely to use in criminal detection. If a suspect is being
question with the use of polygraph to get the truth out.

🠶 Personnel Screening
• Well, inside the organization a person in the circle must be trustworthy, it is use for identifying their
characters.

🠶 Misconduct
• If someone did something wrong, to prove its innocence, it can be prove through it.

🠶 Medical Measurements
• It is normally use when apply for a certain job that has a requirements to comply before they get to be
hired.
IMPORTANCE OF POLYGRAPH TO A LAW ENFORCER

As an aspiring police officer, the importance of polygraph teaches me that this would be very useful for me
as I can relate to it in understanding the importance of polygraph to a law enforcer; I've learned that if I
enter law enforcement and decide to be an investigator, understanding this polygraph will make my job
much easier; understanding this polygraph is a foundation for a strong efficient and effective job one day.

Examples:
🠶 Most effective way of establishing the truth.
Well, in this world full of lies effective way of establishing truth is not easy to find but with the help
of polygraph it makes it easier.

🠶 Guilt is separated from truth (guilty separated from innocent)

By the use of polygraph we can identify if a person is guilty or not.
🠶 If scientifically determined (lie) the investigator can evaluate the evidence.
Scientifically, identifying lie with the use of polygraph is admissible as an evidence to the court that
can prove someone's innocence.

🠶 Saves time, efforts and money

If a person want truthfulness then this is the right choice and can make this easier in many ways.

🠶 Measures the efficiency and effectiveness of the law enforcer.

Truth is, polygraph can set as a basis or standard if you are an effective and efficient law enforcer,
like what our dean said, if you don’t need or have to use a polygraph by simply identifying truth from
someone, you are a great investigator.
THAN
K
YOU!
