QUARTER 4

WEEK 4
PARALLEL
LINES CUT BY A
TRANSVERSAL
OBJECTIVES

• Describe Parallel Lines and Transversal

• Illustrate Parallel Lines and Transversal
• Determine the different angles formed by
parallel lines cut by a transversal
• Manifest speed, accuracy, and perseverance
in solving problems involving parallel lines
and transversal
Parallel Lines
Two lines are parallel if and only if they are
coplanar and do not intersect.

In symbol, m//n or n//m.

Transversal
A line that intersects two or more lines at different
points is called transversal.

Line p is a transversal of line m and line n.

1. Exterior Angles ∠1, ∠2, ∠7, ∠8
2. Interior Angles∠3, ∠4, ∠5, ∠6
Alternate Interior Angles
are a pair of angles on the inner side of each of
those two lines but on opposite sides of the
transversal.

Corresponding Angles
any pair of angles each of which is on the same side of
one of two lines cut by a transversal and on the same
side of the transversal

m∠1 + m∠7 = 180

m∠2 + m∠8 = 180
In the accompanying figure, m//n, and s is a transversal.
What is the measure of each numbered angle if m∠1 =
97? Give the reason for your answer.
m∠1 = 97

m∠1 +m ∠7=180
97 +m ∠7=180

• How can we verify that the edges of
everyday objects are parallel? Builders
use parallel lines to assure that buildings
are sturdy and straight. Air traffic
controllers use parallel lines to ensure the
safety of airplanes in flight. Check some
objects inside the house that appear to
have parallel edges: a desktop, a doorway,
a window, a book, etc. Use a string to
create a transversal that crosses the two
edges that you believe to be parallel.
• Tape the string in place, making sure that
the string is taut. Use a protractor to
measure the alternate interior angles
formed by the edges and the transversal.
Record the measures. Are the alternate
interior angles congruent? Will this
information prove sufficient to verify that the
edges are parallel?
Alternate Exterior Angle
5x = 115

x = 23
By substitution:
5x = 115
5(23)= 115
115 = 115
Same Side Exterior Angle
∠4 + ∠7 = 180

x + 140 =
x = 40
By substitution:
∠7 =
∠7 =
∠7 =
Check:
∠4 + ∠7 = 180

Our answer is correct!!!
