CORE SUBJECTS IN SCHOOL

CURRICULUM
LANGUAGE, SOCIAL SCIENCE AND
HUMANITIES

INTRODUCTION
Core subjects can be traditional academic subjects, such
as Mathematics,History,Geography,Physics,Chemistry
and Economics. Academic school subjects such as
Maths,Chemistry,Geography,History and Economics
are to be compulsory taught to the students.Core
subjects means a course for which there is a declared set
of core standards as approved by the Board. The body
of knowledge,skills and attitude expected to be learned
by all students,generally related to a set of subjects and
learning across that are common to all students,such as
Language,Mathematics,Art,Physical Education,Science
and Social Studies.
ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF
LANGUAGE IN SCHOOL CURRICULUM
 Language is always believed to play a central role in learning.
 Students assimillate new concepts when they listen,talk, read and
write about what they are learning.
 We need to have a Language Across Curriculum (LAC) approach
because by focussing on teaching and learning of language
within a subject.
 Language is a medium for everyday and often fairly trivial
communicative activities.
 Language is a tool for making meaning.
 Language really does matter – not only in the language
classroom,but across the whole curriculum
 Language is a constituent component of higher order thinking
skills and a necessary precondition for successful content
ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL
SCIENCE IN SCHOOL CURRICULUM
School social science curriculum includes the study of
history,geography,economics,political science and sociology.
Social science is a branch of study which deals with human being
– their behaviour,growth and development , relationship and
resources.
The inclusion of social studies in the curriculum right from
primary to secondary classes signifies the importance of the
subject and the role it plays in student life.
Social Science prepares students to grow up as active,
responsible, and reflective member of society.
It also teaches them to address societal and global concerns using
literature, technology and other identifiable community resources.
ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF
HUMANITIES IN SCHOOL CURRICULUM
The humanities through literature, poetry, philosophy abd
hostory provide students the information needed to navigate
the human experience.
Studies in humanities can help students understand both the
world and minds of other individuals by focussing on inquiry
based methods to study world culture.
 Humanities education enriches one’s moral and value based
beliefs and allows one to imaginate situations outside of one’s
own understanding.
Humanities education offer advice for life.
Humanities are many and varied and often challenge one’s
own established world view.
CONCLUSION
Curriculum is therefore very comprehensive in its scope.
It touches all aspects of the life of the pupil. The needs
and interests of pupil’s environment which shouls be
educationally congenial to them- ways and manners in
which their interests can be handeled and warmed up, the
procedures and approaches which cause effective
learning among them.
