Chapter: CAD
 CAD/CAM systems are software packages with
graphic interfacing that facilitates the design of a
new object.

 The first systems developed for the footwear sector

were rearrangements of CAD/CAM packages created
for other sectors,e.g. mechanical and textile but
the limitations of these systems was immediately
obvious and forced other manufacturers to find
specific solutions for the footwear sector.

 The above mentioned factors stimulate footwear

manufacturers to adopt systems that permit a
drastic reduction in the design and industrialization
times for new patterns.
CAD/CAM systems are essential if the following
objectives are to be attained:

 Computer aided design and footwear engineering

 Rapid prototyping
 Interdepartmental integration
 Control of processing cycles and quality

Two main categories of CAD Systems:

 2D Programs

 3D Programs
2D Programs:
In which the computer design process is used only for
the upper,i.e. only for 2D patterns.

3D Programs:
Which enable the shoe designer to interact on the
display with a 3D object such as last ,upper, heel and
sole.
In general CAD 3D allows the shoe designer to design
directly on the last and therefore offers the possibility
to approach the design of the shoe and its components
globally, from styling to prototyping, while 2D systems
only supply a valid aid at the upper engineering phase.
