What does Behavior means?
It is the way in which one acts or conducts oneself,
especially toward others. (Wikipedia)

What is Classroom Behavior?

According to Ministry of Education from, Guyana Classroom
behavior is stimulus-driven responses that occur specifically
within the classroom or how students are acting in the classroom

in response to what is going on or present around them.

Classroom behavior falls into two
categories-(positive or negative.)
Positive behavior include following directions,
completing assignments and remaining attentive while
the teacher speaks.

Negative behavior include being physically
aggressive or threatening others, talking out of turn
and playing spiteful pranks.

Positive Behavior of Kindergarten
pupils
 They enjoy asking lots of questions and
playing challenging games.
 They have a fairly good sense of time,
enjoy thinking and reflecting and
usually have a lot of curiosity and
desire to learn new information.
 Happiness. Children in this age range
engage their world with enthusiasm and
happiness.

Negative Behavior in Classroom
 Less obvious disruptive behaviors
include lateness, sleeping in class, and bringing
in toys, using phones or other electronic devices.
 Most common and disruptive problem
behavior was talking out of turn, followed by
inattentiveness, daydreaming, and idleness.
 The most unacceptable problem behavior was
disrespecting teachers in terms of disobedience
and rudeness, followed by talking out of turn
and verbal aggression.

Approach
SLIDESMANIA.CO
Behavior modification is based on the
idea that good behavior should lead to
positive consequences and
bad behavior should lead to negative
consequences.

Examples of behavior modification which
can be used to increase behavior are:
praise and approval, modeling, positive
programming, self-monitoring, and
shaping.

Types of Behavior Modification

Rewards
Some students respond to receiving
rewards for good behavior, such as
prizes, extra recess or stickers on a chart.

Punishment
Some students respond to punishment.
They stop using unacceptable behavior if
they know they'll face consequences for
breaking the rules.
SLIDESMANIA.CO
Responsibility
Acceptable classroom behavior should be
reinforced by making consequences
closer to those of real life. The world
doesn't always punish or reward people
who behave in a particular manner.

Considerations
Schools have sets of rules, and many have school
improvement teams that study behavior's effect on
learning and adjust rules accordingly. It's helpful to
gain support from parents &community members to
identify problem behavior, set a good example and
teach students to practice proper behavior.

Teachers can use behavior modification in their
classroom to increase desirable student
behaviors and decrease undesirable ones.  Positive reinforcement refers to giving a
student something that will reinforce their good
behavior. Classroom discipline that relies
mostly on positive reinforcement is usually
very effective. Examples of positive
reinforcement include praise, a reward system,
or a token economy system.

Behavior Modification Techniques Negative reinforcement is when a student
in the Classroom is motivated to change behavior because it
will take away something unpleasant. A
student who stops a behavior because his
teacher yells at him is trying to get rid of
the negative reinforce (the yelling).
Negative reinforcement should be used
sparingly with students, because it is less
effective than positive reinforcement.
SLIDESMANIA.CO
Behavior Modification Techniques Positive punishment is used to stop negative
in the Classroom behaviors. Although it sounds confusing to refer
to punishment as positive, when you are using
operant conditioning, the term positive means
adding, so a positive punishment involves
adding a consequence that will help deter a
student from repeating the behavior.

For example, a small child picks his nose in class and the teacher corrects him
in front of the class, or a teen’s cellphone starts ringing during class and he

receives a lecture on why the phone should be turned off.

Behavior Modification Techniques Negative punishment
in the Classroom
Involves taking something away
from a student. Examples include
taking away recess or removing
the teacher’s positive attention.
Negative punishment can be a
very effective way to help a
student learn from their mistakes

Remember:
Use positive reinforcement
whenever possible, as
rewards are more effective
for most children in
modifying future behaviors
than are punishments.

When used consistently, modifications techniques can
change a student’s behavior. Start praising a student
every time he shares, raises his hand, or waits his turn to
speak.

Each time he/she speaks out in class without

raising his hand, ignore him, or take away a privilege.

Students will learn that
good behavior leads to
positive consequences
and bad behavior leads
to negative
consequences.
