Smarter Planet
What do we mean by a Smarter Planet?
■ is a corporate initiative of the information technology company IBM
(International Business Machines Corporation).
■ refers to the way that intelligence is being infused into the systems
and processes that make the world work - into things no one would
recognize as computers: cars, appliances, roadways, power grids,
clothes, even natural systems such as agriculture and waterways.
■ form to encourage the ideas of business, government, and civil
society leaders worldwide towards their path of achieving economic
growth, near-term efficiency, sustainable development, and societal
progress.
VISION

Driven by three I’s

 Instrumentation
 Interconnectedness
 Intelligence
HISTORY
 was officially formed in November 2008, when IBM's
Chairman, CEO, and President Sam Palmisano at the Council
on Foreign Relations presented a new agenda for building a
"smarter planet“
 he emphasized how the world's systems and industries are
becoming more interconnected and intelligent, and that leaders
and citizens can take advantage of this state of affairs to
improve these systems and industries.
 goal is to use the technology and intelligent systems in order to
create smarter power grids, food systems, water, healthcare, and
traffic systems
SMARTER CITY
 technologically modern urban area
that uses different types of electronic
methods and sensors to collect
specific data

 Information gained from that data is

used to manage assets, resources and
services efficiently; in return, that
data is used to improve operations
across the city
SMARTER CITY
 concept integrates information and communication technology
('ICT'), and various physical devices connected to the Internet of
things ('IoT') network to optimize the efficiency of city operations
and services and connect to citizens

 technology allows city officials to interact directly with both

community and city infrastructure and to monitor what is
happening in the city and how the city is evolving

 ICT is used to enhance quality, performance and interactivity of

urban services, to reduce costs and resource consumption and to
increase contact between citizens and government.
SMARTER CITY

 applications are developed to manage urban flows and

allow for real-time responses.

 may therefore be more prepared to respond to

challenges than one with a conventional "transactional"
relationship with its citizens.

Openness/Open Innovation

“Openness is the key to

innovation, history shows”

Ron McFarland
Collaboration and co-creation have always
been around, maybe since humans started
trading or since the cottage industry exchanged
practices from other regions and cultures.
What is Openness or Open
Innovation?
 Business management model for innovation that promotes
collaboration with people and organizations outside the
company
 This innovation model becomes viable when the company
acknowledges that there are many bright professionals and
greater knowledge outside the organization
 Companies implement open innovation practices in different
ways such as alliances between companies, research chairs in
universities, crowdsourcing competitions, and innovation
ecosystems.
ORIGINS
 Cisco may be the most important OI pioneer.

 Its acquisition strategy allowed the company to grow quickly

during the late 90’s.

 The goal of these acquisitions was to make hardware

compatible with software in new technological products.

 This customer-driven innovation strategy helped Cisco

overperform Bell Labs or Lucent by effectively translating big
tech investments into business growth.
ORIGINS
 Trailblazer is the pharmaceutical company Eli-Lilly, spearheaded by its
R&D strategy manager.

 The company reflected on how to make use of collective intelligence to

improve the traditionally low innovation success rates in the
pharmaceutical industry. Consequently, e.Lilly was born around the year
2000, the first open innovation platform to connect with global scientific
knowledge.

 This platform is the origin of Innocentive, Eli Lilly spin-off, whose goal
was to allow other pharmaceutical and consumer goods companies to use
this open model.
ORIGINS
 Procter & Gamble, the company that created in 2000 the so-
called Connect & Develop their new open innovation process.

 P&G’s ultimate goal was to continue growing by $2 billion

annually while keeping a steady R&D investment.

 Procter managed to have up to 50% of its innovations coming

from the outside and, consequently, its R&D productivity
increased by 60%.
IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS

Two approaches to flight (the powered aircraft)

 Samuel Langley's approach

 The Wright brothers' approach

IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS

Samuel Langley's approach:

 He was a professor from New England, an astronomer, and a well-

connected head of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC

 He had convinced the US government that he could build a powered

plane that would stay in the air longer than a simple glider

 he decided to keep all his research and experiments confidential

IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS
Samuel Langley's approach:
 Test Flight
The plane crashed after flying just a short distance
 to everyone's disappointment, Langley's reputation never
recovered
 The fiasco led to the US government pulling all funding for
the project, and it gave up on powered flight after a decade of
wasting money.
IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS

The Wright brothers' approach:

 Just south of Langley's failure, in an area called Kitty Hawk,

with almost nobody watching, two brothers from Ohio were
busy achieving innovation in powered flight, and by spending
only a fraction of what Langley did.

 They were Orville and Wilbur Wright.

IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS
The Wright brothers' approach:

 not well-known researchers (or even engineers for that matter)

 They simply were experienced bicycle builders and had a

small shop

 They simply wanted to address the challenges and problems of

powered flight through building an aircraft.
IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS
The Wright brothers' approach:
 they started building a development team (community
building), which included others in the project to bring in
valued experience
 They were very transparent regarding their activities and
concerns
 They established step-by-step milestones in which they could
make adaptations if need be
IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS
The Wright brothers' approach:
 they collaborated with as many people as they needed to,
gathering expertise where they could find it
 First they wrote to Otto Lillienthal in Frankfurt, Germany, a
famous designer of gliders.
 approached a rather eccentric French-American in Chicago by
the name of Octave Chanute, who studied the powered flight
problems to overcome and published papers on them
IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS
The Wright brothers' approach:

 Thorough documentation of the Wright brothers' collaboration

with Chanute (and his extensive network of like-minded
thinkers) helped solidify their basic design for a powered
aircraft

 hired Charlie Taylor to work in the bicycle shop, an extremely

good mechanic and loved designing machines.
IMPORTANCE OF OPENNESS
As summary:

In both cases, inventors needed to "cross-pollinate" ideas in two

ways:
1. working together directly, and

2. learning sequentially over time.

Innovation
Ecosystem
INNOVATION

is the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, in-

articulated needs, or existing market needs. This is accomplished
through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or
ideas that are readily available to markets, governments and society.

It require only three things:

a. A recognized need,
b. Competent people with relevant technology, and
c. Financial support.
ECOSYSTEM
An ecosystem is a community of living
organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in
conjunction with the non-living components of
their environment (things like air, water and
mineral soil), interacting as a system. These
biotic and abiotic components are regarded as
linked together through nutrient cycles and
energy flows. As ecosystems are defined by
the network of interactions among organisms,
and between organisms and their environment,
they can be of any size but usually encompass
specific, limited spaces.
ECOSYSTEM
The concept of Ecosystem is not only limited to natural environment. The
following type of ecosystem can also be found which helps the human society to
flourish in a better manner
Service Ecosystem Manufacturing Ecosystem
What is an
innovation
ecosystem?
INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM

 Is a network of individuals, entities, resources, and structures

that join forces in a way that catalyzes new products, ideas,
methods, systems, and even ways of life.

 an environment where each component part and its

relationship to one another creates a complex web of
symbiotic interactions that collectively keep the entire system
humming efficiently and effectively.
INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM

 is the term used to describe the large and diverse array of

participants and resources that contribute to and are necessary
for on-going innovation in a modern economy.

 includes universities, government, corporations, startup

accelerators, venture capitalists, private investors, foundations,
entrepreneurs, mentors, and the media.
INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM
Composition
The innovation ecosystem
comprises two distinct, but largely
separated economies:

a. The knowledge economy, which

is driven by fundamental
research

b. The commercial economy, There is a cyclic process which interlinks these

which is driven by the two and can be represented by

marketplace

As innovation is indispensable , we need to develop
Innovation Ecosystems which would foster a climate
of innovations. Each members of the ecosystem can
work in synergy to help mankind move ahead
technologically, socially and economically
