ABOUT BARISHAL
Barisal is located in south-central Bangladesh, formerly a district called Bakerganj, it
is now a division. The town lies in the Ganges (Padma) River delta on an offshoot of
the Arial Khan River (Kirtonkhola). Barisal town was under the control of the Roy
Choudhury family, which now has moved to Calcutta. Incorporated as a municipality
in 1876 and upgraded to city corporation in 2002.It is linked by steamer with Dhaka
(73 miles [117 km] north) and with Chittagong to the southeast.
Due to its location and easy access to both riverine and marine navigation channels,
it has become a transshipment center for rice, hides, and pulses. Bakery, textile,
pharmaceutical products are output of a few industrial installation.
The max. annual average temperature is 35.1°C, minimum 12.1°C; annual rainfall
is 1955 mm.
Barisal City is an old port on the Kirtankhola on the northern shore of the Bay of
Bengal in southern Bangladesh. It is now the divisional headquarter of the Barisal
Division and consists of 30 wards and 50 mahallas. The area of the town is 19.99
km².[5] Barisal municipality was established in 1957 and was turned into a City
Corporation in 2000.

Cricket and football are the two most popular sports in Barisal while tennis
and kabaddi are also popular. There is a national stadium in the city known
as Barisal Divisional Stadium (also known as Abdur Rab Serniabad
Stadium). It is a multi-purpose stadium and has a capacity of 15,000
spectators. It is currently used mostly for cricket matches. It is also used for
football and other sports. Besides different organization share to stage a
show there occasionally. Notable players from Barisal who have played for
the national team include Shahriar Nafees, Sohag Gazi, Kamrul Islam
Rabbi and Fazle Mahmud.
