Old panama
Panama la Vieja or Panama Viejo is the name given to the archaeological site where the city of Panama
was located from its foundation in 1519 until 1671. Its first name was our lady of assumption of
panama.
The expeditions that conquered the Inca Empire of Peru in 1532 left from this place and it was a
stopover on one of the most important trade routes of the American continent, which led to the famous
fairs of name of god and Portobelo, through which most of the gold and silver extracted from the
mines that the Spaniards exploited in America passed.
Old Panama
Despite the development achieved, the conditions of the place were not the best from the
beginning. The shortage of drinking water was one of the main difficulties, which forced its
inhabitants to build several wells and cisterns. The city was hit by at least three devastating
fires and by an earthquake in 1621. It was also besieged on several occasions by pirates. The
worst of these sieges was the one commanded by the British pirate Henry Morgan, who
arrived on January 28, 1671 and remained there until February 24.
Leonardo Da Vinci
Despite all the efforts to keep the city safe from external dangers, the new city was the victim of three
major fires during the 18th century that partially destroyed it and modified its initial structure. The
current configuration dates from the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. This
restructuring allows inserting within the ruins and colonial buildings, neoclassical buildings, Afro-
Antillean and small samples of art deco, which differentiates it from other old towns of cities such as
Cartagena de Indias and Quito, which have an almost exclusively colonial style.
