Old panama

Panama la Vieja or Panama Viejo is the name given to the archaeological site where the city of Panama
was located from its foundation in 1519 until 1671. Its first name was our lady of assumption of
panama.
The expeditions that conquered the Inca Empire of Peru in 1532 left from this place and it was a
stopover on one of the most important trade routes of the American continent, which led to the famous
fairs of name of god and Portobelo, through which most of the gold and silver extracted from the
mines that the Spaniards exploited in America passed.
Old Panama

Despite the development achieved, the conditions of the place were not the best from the
beginning. The shortage of drinking water was one of the main difficulties, which forced its
inhabitants to build several wells and cisterns. The city was hit by at least three devastating
fires and by an earthquake in 1621. It was also besieged on several occasions by pirates. The
worst of these sieges was the one commanded by the British pirate Henry Morgan, who
arrived on January 28, 1671 and remained there until February 24.
Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 5, 1452 and

died on May 2, 1519. He was a Florentine
polymath of the Italian Renaissance. He was a
painter, anatomist, architect, paleontologist, artist,
botanist, scientist, writer, sculptor, philosopher,
engineer, inventor, musician, poet and town
planner. He died accompanied by Francesco Melzi,
to whom he bequeathed his projects, designs and
paintings.
Leonardo Da Vinci
His most famous historical association is painting. Two of his best-known
works, La Gioconda and The Last Supper, have been copied and parodied on
several occasions, as has his drawing of the Vitruvian Man. However, only
about 20 of his works are known, mainly due to his repeated and sometimes
disastrous experiments with new techniques and his chronic inconstancy .
Old town

• The original settlement of Panama City, which today forms the

archaeological site of Panama Viejo, was sacked by English pirates under
the command of Henry Morgan in January 1671. As a result of this
incident, the city was almost completely destroyed. The Spanish Crown
then approved the relocation of the city to a small peninsula, located
approximately 8 km from the original settlement. This peninsula was
surrounded by reefs that were exposed at low tide, making it difficult for
enemy ships to approach. The construction work was supervised by the
new governor, Antonio Fernández de Córdoba, a soldier with vast
experience in the construction of military fortifications. The founding
ceremony of the new city took place on January 21, 1673, two years after
the pirate attack. Initially it was made up of about 300 houses belonging to
the wealthy families of the time and surrounded by thick walls that
excluded it from the rest of the population. The central point of this new
city was the Plaza Mayor, in front of which stands the Metropolitan
Cathedral.
Old town

Despite all the efforts to keep the city safe from external dangers, the new city was the victim of three
major fires during the 18th century that partially destroyed it and modified its initial structure. The
current configuration dates from the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. This
restructuring allows inserting within the ruins and colonial buildings, neoclassical buildings, Afro-
Antillean and small samples of art deco, which differentiates it from other old towns of cities such as
Cartagena de Indias and Quito, which have an almost exclusively colonial style.
