PLAGIARISM

Rofalyn L. Nepomuceno
INTRODUCTION

• When it comes to research or any other activity that requires a person to gather
information, there is a common mistake that they commit, and that is
plagiarism.
• This is much more prevalent especially in these times where information can
be easily accessed and gathered on the Internet.
• Many are unaware that plagiarism exists, and so they are too late to realize that
they had committed it.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

• To understand what is plagiarism;

• To understand why is it still prevalent, and why should it be a matter of
concern, and;
• To learn the ways of avoiding it.
WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

• Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or

without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full
acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in
manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition.
Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional.

WHY IS IT PREVALENT?
WHY IS IT A MATTER OF CONCERN?

• Plagiarism is prevalent among students and professionals whether they intend

to commit it or not.
• One of the reasons for its prevalence is the neglect of acknowledging the
sources of the information presented in a research paper, journal, thesis, etc. It
could be that the person does not know how to acknowledge sources, or that
they have bad intentions to neglect acknowledgements in order to claim the
information as purely from their own.
• Another reason is the advancement of technology, particularly the Internet.
People can access a vast amount of information easily, and copy and paste
information they need.
WHY IS IT PREVALENT?
WHY IS IT A MATTER OF CONCERN?

• Plagiarism is a matter of concern for it can affect a person’s reputation,

especially if they use the ideas and thoughts of other people. It reflects
negatively on that person who violated honesty.
• Another reason is that plagiarism can be considered a legal offense under the
law, for the ideas and thoughts used by the offender are protected under
copyright laws in most countries. If proven guilty, the offender suffers
expulsion from an academic institution, and imprisonment and huge penalties
under law.
HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM?

• Properly give acknowledgment to the sources of information you will be using.

• Avoid using sources of information such as Wikipedia or others that don’t have
permanence in the information. Wikipedia is composed of pages that can be
modified by anyone, and so, there is no permanence in the content as well as
the author of the page.
• Paraphrase the information as much as you can.
• Analyze the information you have and keep the necessary parts.
• Use valid and authentic sources that are widely-used such as electronic or
physical journals, research papers, theses, etc.
