KAKKO
• An instrument used in
gagaku and is made
up of deer skin.
SHOKO
• The shōko is a small bronze gong,
struck with two horn beaters, used
in Japanese gagaku. It is
suspended in a vertical frame and
comes in three sizes. In Buddhist
music and Japanese folk music the
instrument is called kane/shō.
• Korean is a country between two very influential cultures in
Asia, namely China and Japan. Its music is marked by a
gradual development over time rather than by drastic
changes. Korea has a rich musical culture and there existed
an ancient Korean music shown through the pictures and
symbols on the wall of the cemeteries in the old times.
• Korean has been divided into two in the year 1948.

- Also know as the good and noble
music
SOG-AK OR MINSOGAK
• It is category of Korean music traditionally associated with
the lower classes or for the general public and are vibrant
and energetic.

• It also know as the music for the common people’s


ceremonies.
• Sijo - Also known as the classical lyric song with an
accompaniment of the following instrument, haegum, taegum,
p’iri, and changgu.

• P’ansori – Korean where one person performs an operatic


song with a barrel drum as a musical accompaniment. P’ansori
singers have a trenuous vocal projection and have an extremely
raspy timbre.
Pomp’ae – one of the kind of genre in Korean Buddhist chant
which is similar to Gregorian chant.
- it is a beautiful kind of Korean music not meant to be
listened, but the objective of this music is for
worshipping.
• It has Two Musical Styles:
• HOSSORI – a short chant music
• CHISSORI – a long chant kind of music of Korea

Hyangak - It is a native court banquet music of Korea


WHAT ARE THE EXAMPLE OF ENSEMBLE
INSTRUMENTS PIECES?

• SALMUNORI – this ensemble is played by four


instrumentalists who play the four percussion
instruments of Korea which ching (jing),
kkwaenggwari, changgu, (janggu), and puk (buk).
• Pungmul – an outdoor band music composed of
drums, gongs, and taep’yangso.
• Sinawi Ensemble – considered as the most
extensive in improvisation.
•It also known as a popular stage presentation of
music as an accompaniment for the Salp’uri’ch’um.
HYANG-BIPA

• A five-stringed instrument
played with a pick. It is  a pear-
shape lute that is a traditional
Korean musical instrument.

• SAENG-HWANG – It is a free reed
mouth organ derived from the Chinese
sheng, though its tuning is different. It is
constructed from 17 bamboo pipes,
each with a metal free reed, mounted
vertically in a windchest. It is played like
a harmonica.
TAEPYONGSO
• It has a conical wooden body
made from yuja, daechu, or
yellow mulberry wood, with a
metal mouthpiece and cup-
shaped metal bell.
• A double reed pipe; this
instrument is in high pitch.
HYANG-PIRI
• It  is the longest and most common
out of all piris. Because of its loud
and nasal tone, it usually plays the
main melody in an ensemble. 
• It also known as in Korean music
culture because it carries the main
melody in music ensembles.
- An hourglass-shaped drum
mostly played in all Korean
court and folk pieces.
PUK (BUK)
• the buk is a traditional Korean drum.
While the term buk is a native Korean
word used as a generic term meaning
"drum", it is most often used to refer
to a shallow barrel-shaped drum, with
a round wooden body that is covered
on both ends with animal skin.
• Known to be the one of the oldest Korean
Instruments.
BAK
• Bak is a wooden clapper used in
Korean court and ritual music. The
person playing the bak is called
jipbak, serving as the conductor or
musical supervisor for the group. The
bak creates the clapping sound if
clapped to indicate when the music
starts.
• It made from 6 pieces of birch wood.
