1
Delight in heedfulness!
Guard well your
thoughts! Draw yourself
out of this swamp of evil,
even as an elephant
draws himself
out of the mud.
Dhammapada Verse 327

While residing at the Jetavana

Monastery, the Buddha spoke
把自己 this verse with reference to the
elephant called Pàveyyaka.

The elephant Pàveyyaka when

young was very strong;
in due course,
he became old and decrepit.
One day, old Pàveyyaka got Savatthi or Sravasti where
the Buddha gave many
into a swamp. He was stuck in
Dhamma discourses
the mud and could not get out of
the muddy swamp.

大象 Pàveyyaka 年轻时非常强壮;
3
When King Pasenadi of Kosala was told
about it, he sent an elephant trainer to
help the elephant get out of the mud. The
elephant trainer went to the site where
the elephant was. There, he made the
musicians strike up a martial tune.
Hearing the military music, the elephant
felt as if he were on a battlefield; his
spirits rose, he pulled himself with all his
might, and was soon out of the mud.

4
When the monks told the
Buddha about this he said,
“Monks! Just as that
elephant pulled itself out of
the mud, so
also must you all pull
yourselves out of the mud of
moral defilements.”

Verse 327. “Find joy in mindfulness and watch your mind well!
Wean yourself from the evil path like an elephant sunk in the mud.”
Pull yourself out of the swamp of defilements like an elephant
pulls itself out of the mud.
Find joy in remembering, protect your mind well. As an elephant has sunk
into a swamp and pulls itself out of it, so you too must pull yourself out of
the mental poisons of Greed, Hatred and Delusion.

In the ninth year of Buddha’s Ministry, He
was residing in Kosambi.
There were two groups of monks who
were at conflict with each other; they
quarreled because of their different views.
The Buddha tried in different ways to
settle the quarrel peacefully but His efforts
failed … the monks did not want to listen
to the Buddha’s advice.

7
The Buddha then left without a word
taking only his bowl and robes. He retired
to a forest some distance away
from the monastery at Kosambi.
During His time in the forest, an elephant
tended to the Buddha’s needs … the
elephant brought the Buddha fruits for
his meals. A monkey also brought the
Buddha food like fruits and a honeycomb
one day as an offering to the Blessed
One.

Meanwhile the people in Kosambi found out that
the Buddha had gone away because of the
quarreling among the monks. The people then
stopped offering alms food to the quarreling
monks. It was then that the quarreling monks
came to their senses … they settled their
disputes. Only then the monks realized the
Buddha had gone to the forest to live alone..
News reached Venerable Ananda at Savatthi. He
traveled with the Kosambi monks to the forest
to seek out the Buddha. The monks asked the
Buddha for forgiveness for their foolish ways;
they resolved not to quarrel again.

Venerable Ananda asked the Buddha
how He could manage
to live alone in the forest.

If you come across a wise, full-grown companion, one

If you do not meet a wise, mature companion,

one who leads a virtuous life, then live alone.
Just like a king who, after his kingdom has been
