Unit Objectives
1. Learn the main characteristics of the geographic
surroundings and daily life on ancient Greece and
value their legacy in today’s society.

2. Obtain information from the past through text,


images, and maps, and exchange opinions.

3. Value democracy, recognizing its importance for


living in society.
WHAT IS A
CIVILIZATION?
A civilization is a complex human society, usually made up of different
cities, with certain characteristics of cultural and technological
development. It considers:

❖ Social structure

❖ Construction and settlement

❖ Art and culture

❖ Division of labor

❖ Development of technology

❖ A system of language and writing

❖ Religion

The Greek civilization


emerged more than 2500
years ago in the Balkan
Peninsula located in
Europe.
Main aim: to characterize the Greek landscapes and compare them with the
Chilean landscape.

The characteristics of the greek landscape

Their geographic location was composed of mountains,


valleys, islands, and archipelagos.
★ It was located in the temperate climatic zone.
★ Mainly Mediterranean landscape.
★ The four seasons clearly defined.

Main aim: to understand the influence of the geographic surroundings of the Greek
civilization.

The influence of the geographic surroundings

● Agriculture and commerce

Because of the mountains, they lack of


stable farmland but had an efficient
agricultural system.

They obtained other products thanks to


maritime trade.
Some of the elements they used to trade are:
● The importance of the sea

Their territory was surrounded by sea, which


helped them to obtain different products from it,
like seafood and fish.

It also made them expert marines and traders

Their currency was called Drachma.

Their most important mean of transport for trading


and war was the ship.
