Disability is the inability to see ability

What does handicap refer to?


• A handicap is a physical or mental disability.
• If an event or a situation handicaps someone or something, it places them at a disadvantage.
• Impairment is defined as “any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure or
function.
• Do the words disability and handicapped mean the same thing? The short answer is NO. Disability and handicapped do not mean the
same thing
• Disability, on the other hand, means “any restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability to
perform an activity
• Handicap is defined as “a disadvantage for a given individual that limits or prevents the fulfillment of a role
that is normal
• person can be physically disabled due to two reasons: Congenital/Hereditary – the person has physical disability since
 
birth or the disability developed at a later stage due to genetic problems, problems with muscle cells or injury during
birth.
What are the most common causes of disability?
• Illnesses like cancer, heart attack or diabetes cause the majority of long-term disabilities. Back pain, injuries, and arthritis are also
significant causes.
• Lifestyle choices and personal behavior that lead to obesity are becoming major contributing factors.

things than other people, but with the right supports it is possible to have a fulfilling and satisfying life, and not be
handicapped
• it is very important to know that we have a vital role in helping individuals with special needs. By adapting and
modifying the environment to be able to assist and accommodate them, their disability does not have to be a handicap.
Remember, a handicap is a disadvantage, and oftentimes, it is the environment that causes the disadvantage. When we do
our part to meet their needs, they are able to fulfil a role similar to their peers.

person with a disability the support they need so they will never have to be handicapped.
