KANNADA

PRESENTATION
- CHANDAN M
Samanyaralli asamanyaru
Written by Sudha Murthy

● It's is a whole book of different small stories filled in.

● There are about 19 different stories of simple minded individuals in North Karnataka.
● These situations are all mostly related to real life.
● One reading can experience or would relate to their experiences. These stories are written in simple way but in
North kannada style.
● Every story has its own individuality. These hilarious stories having a moral makes the readers curious to know what
happens next. These stories tend to be attention catching. Every story has an amazingly satisfying moral.

My favorite stories include:

● Adige Ambuja (a story about a women, even though she doesnt know how to cook,
how an housewife radiates love, care and good will)
● Sahasi Bhagava(talks about how if a woman can achieve everything
if she puts her heart and soul into it.
● Dabeen nalini (this is a very funny story of relatable real life situations)
● BANDAL BINDAPPA
BANDAL BINDAPPA

Bindappa was a very handsome man, to an extent where people believed he was an actor. He was tall and fair, he had
black hair carried on along with an amazing smile. His real name was patil, but he was famously known as Bandal
Bindappa.
There was a time when the narrator had to go to Bindappa’s place. He asked Bindappa about his house details. As
they never had the concept of mains and crosses in their village.
Earlier, to look for a doctors house, the narrator had to tell them the whole history of the doctor like
●Doctor was a very smart man who has a white dog which just sleeps and only barks when someone comes home.
And that the doctor’s son had a love marriage to a delhi women.
After all these details were specified, the narrator got the directions to the doctors place.
So when narrator asked about Bindappa’s place, Bindappa suggested him to take a bus to Bekar nagar and then walk
about 10 steps, where he would find keerthi stores. And then, he was informed to ask the storekeeper about
Bindappa’s name and the keeper will drop you to my place.
The next day the narrator had been to Bekar nagara and walked almost about a 1000 steps but could not find keerthi stores. He later,
asked someone walking past by and they mentioned it was in the previous stop and not this one.

The narrator walked to the previous stop and did find the keerthi stores and when he enquired the store keeper who had just been there
about Bindappa’s house. The keeper first refused to take him to Bindappa’s place, but later just agreed on. He asked the narrator about
which bindappa he was looking for and started naming all the Bindappa’s living nearby.

Then the narrator remembered and mentioned about Bindappa’s wife saraswati, who was working as a teacher at a school.

After which the shopkeeper remembered and gave the details of Bindappa’s house.

The moment the narrator reached Bindappa’s house, he heard stories about Bindappa’s saying -

● He never takes an insult

● Is someone who does not lose his temper easily
● never says the truth
● does things unnecessarily which create problems
● He was never normal - he was born only at 11 months.

No one was aware of what work Bindappa does, neither did saraswati know about it.
Bindappa was married to saraswati as both their fathers were close friends and Bindappa was known to them as an entrepreneur who owned Raghavendra
Enterprises.

Saraswati still works as a teacher. Bindappa only got income at rare events. He always took money from saraswati.

Bindappa lies a lot. Bindappa even lied about writing and receiving a letter from Bill Clinton an American politician who served as the 42nd president of the
United States. He makes all his false stories seems like fantasies that happened.

Even though Bindappa had all these negative qualities. He had an amazing knowledge about the history of their village. He knew about the entire history. Nobody
ever could tell the history or stories the way Bindappa does.

Bindappa also had a habit to narrating stories of kumara rama, sangolli rayanna, bhakta mera, onake obavva, verasala, rani shantale etc with real life morals to all
the kids and the narrator taking them for a swim in the hot summers. His style of narrating stories in a fantasized way made people love him.

Bindappa was someone who knew 5 languages, like kannada, hindi, marathi, urdu and english. Therefore, whenever someone went out on a trip Bindappa would
be along.

The same way as soon as he was back, the narrator asked Bindappa about his trip to Kashi and he narrated about visiting the temple with great security surrounded
all around, and also mentioned about an incident of robbery with additional fiction. (Bindappa mentioned that the robbers came in on horses, covering their face
and had a gun. But the truth which later leela (a fellow traveller) said that the robbery did happen, but they weren't carrying any weapons, or neither had they been
on horses.)

After all this, Bindappa came back to narrator and asked about his daughter who was studying abroad and asked him if he should mail a letter that the wrote in
kannada about the Janapada Geethe. But was disappointed knowing that she did not know kannada.
CONCLUSION

● The book is a page turner for sure. These interesting stories

would make you want to read more.
● The moral of the story is that:
Even though Bindappa was not a man of his words, was
someone who always lied and made his way out. The love and
respect he had towards his state and language were to their
peaks.
One must understand that prioritising and giving things back to
your country, nature, language and culture is important.
