Taba’s Inverted Model
Developed by Hilda Taba, an architect, a
curriculum theorist, a curriculum reformer and a
teacher educator.

This model is used to enhance the

thinking skills of the students.
The approach to curriculum development is
referred to as an inverted model because it
starts in the classroom with the teacher.

Eight Steps of Inverted Model
1. Step 1 is diagnosing needs using a
need assessment tool.
2. Step 2 is formulating specific
objectives, including concepts and
attitudes to be learned, ways of thinking
to be enforced and habits and skills to be
mastered.
3. Step 3 is selecting content by carefully
choosing topics and writing a rationale
to support each choice.
4. Step 4 is organizing the content.

Student as a Source – the curriculum developer should
determine the learner’s needs and wants.
Society as a Source – the learner needs to understand the
environment, interacting with others is essential.
Subject Matter as a Source – to master a subject, one must
understand its underlying structure.
Philosophy as a source – it is necessary to define the schools
philosophy as sound curriculum development begins with sound
thinking and sound thinking begins by formulating a philosophy.
Psychology as a Source – effective curriculum development
requires understanding the learner’s level of development and
the nature of the learning process.

Strength
- Considers curriculum as a
means of aiming towards and
educational goal.
- Engages internal comparison of
outcomes with objectives,
evaluations using this model do
not apply for costly and
disruptive comparisons between
experimental and control
groups.
Weakness
- The objectives does not
