Taba’s Inverted Model
Developed by Hilda Taba, an architect, a
curriculum theorist, a curriculum reformer and a
teacher educator.

This model is used to enhance the

thinking skills of the students.
The approach to curriculum development is
referred to as an inverted model because it
starts in the classroom with the teacher.
31
Eight Steps of Inverted Model
1. Step 1 is diagnosing needs using a
need assessment tool.
2. Step 2 is formulating specific
objectives, including concepts and
attitudes to be learned, ways of thinking
to be enforced and habits and skills to be
mastered.
3. Step 3 is selecting content by carefully
choosing topics and writing a rationale
to support each choice.
4. Step 4 is organizing the content.
Eight Steps of Inverted Model

5. Step 5 is selecting learning experiences

6. Step 6 is organizing learning
experiences.
7. Step 7 is evaluating the unit
continuously, noting the student’s likes.
8. Step 8 is checking the balance and
sequence.

Tyler’s Ends-Means Model
Developed by Ralph Tyler, an American
Educator who worked in the field of assessment
and evaluation.

Introduced a revolutionary idea

to curriculum planning.
The curriculum developer should start by deciding
what purposes the curriculum is to have and then plan
accordingly.

Five Elements identified by Tyler
Student as a Source – the curriculum developer should
determine the learner’s needs and wants.
Society as a Source – the learner needs to understand the
environment, interacting with others is essential.
Subject Matter as a Source – to master a subject, one must
understand its underlying structure.
Philosophy as a source – it is necessary to define the schools
philosophy as sound curriculum development begins with sound
thinking and sound thinking begins by formulating a philosophy.
Psychology as a Source – effective curriculum development
requires understanding the learner’s level of development and
the nature of the learning process.
