Introduction to Conservation of Forest
Conservation Forest is the practice of planting and maintaining forested areas for the benefit and
sustainability of future generations. Forest conservation became popular with the use of natural
resources but due to the increase of deforestation activities, it has become essential to conserve forests
throughout the world. Deforestation is the loss of forests for lands for agriculture, livestock, etc.

Why do we need to conserve our forest?
We need to conserve our forests because of the various benefits, forests
provide, which includes land conservation, water sources, control of climate
change and creation of natural environs essential to human existence.
Below are additional benefits from conserving forests:
1. Forest provide us with Oxygen, which causes rainfall.
2. Forest prevents soil erosion.
3. Plants are dependent on animals and birds for their seed dispersal.
4. Forests provide us with various medicines
5. Various forest products are used as raw materials in industries.

4
The importance on Conservation
of forests.

Forests play an important role in our

life. They provide us with various
valuable resources like oxygen and
raw material for different products.
But humans are clearing the forest’s
rate. So to regulate such inhuman
activities towards the forests the
Government of India enacted the
Forest Conservation Act.

5
Deforestation

To prevent deforestation and conserve wildlife the

government has made a few areas as reserve forests
cutting trees and killing animals is punishable.

They are known as wildlife sanctuaries or national parks.

Some well-known ones are:

Deforestation At my hometown

I live in North side of Guwahati. You can walk down

to the River Brahmaputra.

The people here are cutting down trees, just so they

can view the river from their balcony…

By Sragvi Kalita 8
They use excavators to level the land… so that they can look at the
river. Everything over here will get cut down and it will all be
barren.
I planted as many saplings
as I could. Up till now I
think I have planted 30 to
40 saplings. I am doing my
best to plant trees and I pray
that our planet will be more
green than ever before.
PROTECTION OF

FOREST
Protection

forests are forests that mitigate or prevent the

impact of a natural hazard, including
a rockfall, avalanche ,erosion ,landslide ,debrisflow ,def
orestation.

  We should conserve forest because

they are essential for us in the

following terms. Forest provide
us with oxygen they cause rainfall.
Forest prevents soil erosion.

WHY SHOULD WE
PROTECT FOREST?

We get many types of benefits from forest.

Forests play many roles in our life. From the forest, we
get wood ,animal feed, oxygen, seeds, Ayurveda
Medicines, natural medicines and herbs. Forest
Protect us from many calamities like hurricanes,
Floods. The environment  has been helping us
become a part of our life cycle. The balance of
Nature keeps coming from forests. Therefore, we
must conserve forests. We have many advantages due to forest tree
plants  such as
Stopping the flow of water. reducing soil erosion. The forest protects
us like a strong

The increasing pressures exerted on the environment by humans make the preservation of natural areas crucial for
the persistence of biological diversity [mcneely1994 Groombridge and Jenkins 2002]. Protected areas are one of the
most effective tools available for conserving biodiversity. While protected areas can be degraded by external
pressures, the majority of terrestrial protected areas are successful at stopping deforestation and mitigating the
damaging effects of killing, hurting, fire, and Graz-ingbrunerat all 2001]. Marine protected areas [maps] often have
bans on fishing or may require actions that reduce pollution .therefore, while dedicating protected areas is only one of
many actions we can take to conserve biodiversity, it can abate some of the key threats.

By v leysha Tips to Prevent Wildfires
1. Check weather and drought conditions.
Pay close attention to weather and drought conditions, which can affect the flammability of vegetation.
Avoid any activities that involve fire or sparks when it’s hot, dry and windy. If the conditions aren’t right, choose non-
flammable options.
2. Build your campfire in an open location and far from flammables. Many people love to go camping and enjoy the
warmth and light from a campfire, but your campfire can cause wildfires if you do not build and extinguish
it properly.
 Select a flat, open location away from flammable materials such as logs, brush or decaying leaves and needles.
 Scrape away grass, leaves and needles down to the mineral soil.
 Cut wood in short lengths, pile it within the cleared area and light the fire.
 Stay with your fire.
 Extinguish it completely before leaving

3. Douse your campfire until it’s cold.

Make sure your campfire is completely out by following the steps below:
1. Douse the fire with at least one bucket of water.
2. Stir it.
3. Add another bucket of water.
4. Stir it again.
Nationally, almost 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by humans. These preventable wildfires threaten lives, property and our
precious natural resources. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a public land pro, you play a valuable role
in preventing wildfires and protecting our natural resources.
Your campfire should be cold to the touch before you leave.
4.Keep vehicles off dry grass.
If you are off-roading, remember that your exhaust can reach temperatures of 1,000+ degrees! So, avoid driving or parking
over dry grass.

5.Regularly maintain your equipment and vehicle.

Vehicles and equipment can shoot sparks from their exhaust, particularly vehicles that haven’t received regular maintenance.

6. Practice vehicle safety.

Carry a shovel, bucket and a fire extinguisher in your vehicle to put out fires. Off- highway vehicles must have a spark
arrester. You should also carry a bucket, but you could also use a helmet or anything else to carry water.

7.Keep sparks away from dry vegetation.

Make sure you never operate equipment that produces sparks near dry
vegetation. Always clear the area around your workspace. This area should be even larger if it is windy and dry.
Create clearings where all flammables have been removed. The width or radius of the clearing will vary with the conditions
from 10 to 25 feet.

8.Cautiously burn debris and never when it’s windy or restricted.

Sometimes, people burn trash, leaves, agricultural waste, or other materials.
If you plan to burn debris on your private property, make sure you have water nearby (such as a garden hose) and never
burn anything if it’s windy.
Deforestation Definition:
• Deforestation is the purposeful clearing of forested land.
• means conversion of forest land into non forest area resulting in degradation of the ecosystem.
• According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 18 million acres of forests
are lost every year around the globe due to industrial revolution.

• Throughout history and into modern times, forests have been razed for agriculture, animal grazing, to
obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing and construction.

• The greatest amount of deforestation is occurring in tropical rainforests. Wit construction of roads into
regions that were once almost inaccessible, it as become more.

Causes of deforestation
• Over population : As the population increases, more land is needed for housing and
other purposes, Cutting of trees is proportional to the increase in the number of people.
• Timber harvest : Timber is of great value in the modern day world. Trees are cut and
are mostly used for its timber.
• Expansion of agriculture :forests has been cut for agricultural due to the increasing
demand for its goods. Since agriculture easily degrades the soil fertility, these lands
are further assigned for cattle rearing.
• Expansion of infrastructure : Tonnes of trees have been cut and will be cut to build
roadways, railways and airways.
• Forest fire : large areas have been devastated due to this wild fire.
• Over grazing of cattle : Large forest area has been cleared for grazing and raising of
cattle.
Effects of deforestation
• Global warming: trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere ,So
when trees are cut the balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide gets
disrupted, the carbon dioxide levels increases and it doesn’t allow heat
to escape from earth thus leading to global warming.
• Soil erosion : The trees and its roots act as a bodyguard and help the soil
to stay in place. All the vegetation holds back the top most layer of soil
rich in humus. All these are washed away due to deforestation
• Loss in biodiversity : Forest are homes that provide food and shelter to
plants, animals, insects, birds, worms and lot of microbial organisms like
bacteria and fungi. Deforestation disrupts their natural habitat thus
losing a lot of varied species of all these.
•flooding : The soil in the deforested area is incapable to hold water so
as a result mudslides and floods gets triggered.

•Climate change : This is mainly because of the change in the level of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
•As the climate gets warmer the natural texture of the soil reduces making
it dry. This soil becomes infertile and unfit for cultivation. In the long run
this will lead to dry land.

•Silting of rivers and dams : Sediments are deposited in rivers and dams
due to soil erosion caused by deforestation. This reduces the lifespan of
dams.
•Loss of medicines : Forests is abundant in natural source of medicines.
All these are at stake because of deforestation.
MEASURES TO CONTROL DEFORESTATION

1. Reforestation
: The best way to heal the loss is to plant more and more trees. If a tree is cut for any
commercial purpose, 10 trees should be simultaneously planted.
2. Environmental organizations : All of us should lend a helping hand towards these organizations that support
and replenish the environment. Money can be lended and voluntary works can be organized to buy and plant
more trees.
3. Properawareness : Proper awareness should be created among all citizens regarding the after effects of
deforestation so as to protect the future generations of mankind.
4. Recycled
products : Consumers should be encouraged to use recycled items like paper, books, bags and
notebooks so that no extra trees need to be cut for the manufacture these items.
5. Forest
protection act : Forest protection act should be amended and strictly followed so as to avoid illegal
timber collection.
6. Farming practices : A change in the farming practices can reduce deforestation. Rather than using shifting
agriculture it is more feasible to use rotation cropping.
FUN FACT By
shalia Almost 31% of
the earth’s land surface is covered by forests. According to a 2015
report, 23% of India’s land cover consists of the forest region. Trees
and plants in the forest are an integral part of the ecosystem. It
sustains life on the planet, provides clean air and shelter.
Forests provide us with a variety of resources such as wood,
timber, fibre and other raw materials for domestic as well as commercial
purposes. They absorb the harmful carbon dioxide gas and maintain the
earth’s temperature. They also hold the soil firmly and prevent erosion of
soil. This is why it is beneficial to conserve forests.
Summary
Ways people have conserved forests:
•In1947, villagers in the hills of
Uttarakhand started a novel method of
preventing deforestation. They put their
arms around, hugged them tightly and
refused to allow the loggers to cut the
trees. This movement led by Sunderlal
Bahuguna came to be known as the
“Chipko Movement”. The movement
prevented the loss of many forests.
CAUSESOf Deforestaion
According to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) secretariat,
the overwhelming direct cause of deforestation is agriculture. Subsistence farming is responsible for 48%
of deforestation; commercial agriculture is responsible for 32%; logging is responsible for 14%, and fuel
wood removals make up 5%.
Experts do not agree on whether industrial logging is an important contributor to global deforestation. Some
argue that poor people are more likely to clear forest because they have no alternatives, others that the poor
lack the ability to pay for the materials and labour needed to clear forest. One study found that population
increases due to high fertility rates were a primary driver of tropical deforestation in only 8% of cases..

ENVIORNMENTAL EFFECTS
Deforestation is ongoing and is shaping climate and
geography.
Deforestation is a contributor to global warming,[61]

the enhanced greenhouse effect. Tropical
deforestation is responsible for approximately 20% of
world greenhouse gas emissions

What are the uses of forests
• Forests help in the prevention and control of soil erosion.
• Forests help in controlling floods.
• Forests help in checking on the spread of deserts.
• Forests increase soil fertility.
• Forests have a direct effect on the climate of a place.
• Forests are also useful to human beings in many ways.
Uses of forests to human beings
• Fuel – Wood from the forests are a major source of energy for cooking and keeping us warm in the
winter.
• Timber – Wood from the trees in the forests are used to make a wide variety of furniture, tool handles,
matches, ploughs, bridges, boats etc.
• Food – We are able to get different types of foods from forests, like fruits, leaves, spices and roots.
Animals that live in the forest are also used for their meat and fur.
• Shelter – Trees from the forests are used to build houses where human beings can live comfortably.
• Paper – Paper factories are able to use trees from these forests to make paper.
• We are able to get many more products from forests, like honey, rubber, gum, medicine and wax which
are all very useful to human beings.
• Although there are many uses of forests, we must be responsible while utilizing the resources available
in them and use the products that we get from it carefully so that we do not loose the forests present in
the world.
A PROTECTION OF FOREST.
FOREST ARE IMPORTANT FOR ANIMALS AND US.
THEY GIVE US MANY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.
WE GET WILD HONEY FROM TREES IN FORESTS.
BIG AND SMALL ANIMALS LIVE IN FORESTS LIKE LOINS, ELEPHANT AND
WOLVES.
FORESTS ALSO GIVE US MEDICINAL PLANTS .

IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE FOREST AND ANIMALS OUR GOVERNMENT IMPOSED CERTAIN RULES AND
REGULATIONS LIKE THE 1878 ACT AND THE 1927 FOREST ACT.
THE ACT HAS BEEN CLESSIFIED THE FOREST INTO 3 GROUPS 1 st RESERVED FOREST 2 n d PROTECTED FOREST
3 R D VILLAGE FOREST.
IF ANYONE VIOLATE THE RULES AND THE REGULATION WILL BE IN PRISONMENT WITH HEAVY FINES.
WE SHOULD PROTECT OUR FOREST….
