Integral membrane proteins
Functions of integral proteins: as receptors that bind
specific substances at the membrane surface, as channels
or transporters involved in the movement of ions and solutes
across the membrane, or as agents that transfer electrons
during the processes of photosynthesis and respiration.
Distribution of integral proteins: Freeze-Fracture Analysis
Studying the structure and properties of integral proteins
Lipid rafts. (a) Image of the upper surface of an artificial lipid bilayer containing
phosphatidylcholine is provided by an atomic force microscope. Black background, PC;
Orange, sphingomyelin; Yellow peak, GPI-anchor proteins. (b) Schematic model of a
lipid raft within a cell. The outer leaflet primarily consists cholesterol (yellow) and
sphingolipids (red head groups), and PC (blue head groups) with long saturated FA also
tend to concentrate in this region. GPI-anchored proteins are thought to become
concentrated in lipid rafts. The lipids in the outer leaflet of the raft have an organizing
effect on the lipids of the inner leaflet.
The controversy arises over whether lipid rafts exist within living cells.
