Title : Pierre Jeanneret Contribution to Chandigarh project

Pierre Jeanneret House Museum, Chandigarh

The first ever house built in Chandigarh was that of Pierre Jeanneret. The home of the
city’s first chief architect is located in Sector 5 (no.57) – right opposite the famous Sukhna
Lake. Today, this home serves as a museum and tells the story of Jeanneret’s creative
genius. Pierre Jeanneret lived in this house for 11 years while he and his cousin, the much
renowned LeCorbusier were building the city. So to understand this house, is also in a way
understanding the city’s architectural vision.

CLIMATE STUDY -
He also paid special attention to the climate
which is decisive in the entire local life style. By
creating cool area shaded bt verandahs and
poticos in front of buildings as well as transversal
ventilations through the layout of the plan,
hemade sure that the city and buildings
remained pleasant even in the hottest season, at
a period when the absence of air conditions
could have tured these buildings into genuine
ovens unfit for living.

MATERIAL STUDY -
The last point is the role of traditional
materials which Pierre Jeanneret used express
rhythm, cornice outlines in a very simple but
nevertheless diversified combination. For
example, the bricks are made from clay, the
masonry is based on rubble and the reinforced
concrete contains small prefabricated
components.

Title : Jane Drew Contribution to Chandigarh project

Housing Complex Higher Secondary School Health Centre, Chandigarh

Drew's part of the project consisted of both government and private housing, shops
and shopping areas, health centers, schools and colleges. Working with a meager budget,
she was able to work successfully with the limited resources available and regarded the
entire project as "an exercise in what you could do without." In each design she
submitted, Drew took into account the need to build housing that provided shade and
shelter from the unforgiving sun of the Indian subcontinent. Her geometric designs, also
responding dynamically to the relentless realities of sun and heat, resulted in attractive,
yet practical, sunprotecting canopies, as well as deep, shadowed recesses, and egg-crate
walls that were meant to be as pleasant to the eye as they were protective of the body.

Housing Complex -

Sector 22,Drew designed the Type 13 ‘peon’ housing and was convinced that
Nehru’s low aspiration could be bettered76. The modest white rendered dwellings
consisted of three mainrooms, plus a shower room and WC set within the
substantial rear courtyard.Economy was achieved through adopting a terrace
layout and by omitting the roof altogetherfrom the outside WC. A covered external
space adjacent to the kitchen could also be used for cooking and laundry during
the dry seasons.
