    Light waves can undergo several interactions when encountering materials and surfaces: Regular reflection occurs when light rays hit a smooth surface and are reflected coherently, enabling the formation of images. Diffuse reflection scatters light rays in different directions when hitting an irregular surface, preventing image formation. Refraction is the bending of light rays when passing from one material to another with different speeds. Interference results from the overlapping of light waves, with constructive interference producing brighter regions where crests overlap and destructive interference producing darker regions where crests overlap with troughs.
