Present simple

To describe: Habits/routines, unchanging situations (permanent),


general truths, fixed arrangement.

Ex:
● I brush my teeth (habit)
● I work at Berckley School. (unchanging Situation)
● The sun rises from the east. (general truth)
● The water boils at 100°C.
● Your test starts at 10 a.m (fixed arrangement)
● Our classes are/start at 9:30 am on Saturdays.
Structure
POSITIVE FORM (+) :

1. I walk to the school/ we go to school


2. You study at Universidad del Atlantico.

s + verb + complement.

3. - She walks the dog./Maria paints a picture.


4. He runs around the house./Carlos walks
5. It walks using batteries. The toy uses

s + verb (s) (es) (ies) + complement.


ATTENTION SPECIAL CASES

verb ending in: He watches Television.


● -Ch
● -Sh Sebastian washes the dishes.
● -x She fixes the radio.
● -ss Juliana mixes the flour.
● -O Yenni misses the bus.
it goes so slow.
The turtle goes so slowly.
ATTENTION SPECIAL CASES

verb ending in: He studies English.


● consonant +y= study She studies law.
cry, try
● vowel + y= play, buy, The baby cries so high.
she tries her best.
Try= tries cry=cries

The dog plays in the park.

Negative

To make a negative sentence in English we normally use Do not /Does not


Don't or Doesn't
Negative Contractions

Affirmative: You speak French. Do not= Don't


Negative: You do not speak French. Does not= Doesn't
I don't like meat = I do not like
Affirmative: He speaks German. meat.
Negative: He does not speak German.

There is no difference in meaning though we normally use contractions in spoken


English.

I / you / we / they do not (don´t) have / buy cereal for breakfast


he / she / it does not (doesn´t) eat / like etc.

Examples of Negative Sentences with Do not and Does not:


● You do not speak Arabic.
● John does not speak Italian.
● We do not have time for a rest.
● The cat does not move.
● He and I do not want to go to the party.
● She does not like fish.
Interrogative form

To make a question in English we normally use Do or Does. It has no translation in Spanish though it is
essential to show we are making a question.

Affirmative: You speak English. Do/Does Subject Verb* The Rest of the sentence
Question: Do you speak English?
Yes, I do
No, I don´t
Affirmative: He speaks French. Wh/Do I / you / we / they have / need a new bike?

How do we use the Present Continuous tense?

We use the Present Continuous to talk about:


● action happening now
● action happening around now
Ex: I am eating my lunch.
John is looking for a new job.
Structure

Basic rule Just add -ing to the base verb:

work → working

play → playing

assist → assisting

see → seeing

be → being
If the base verb ends in consonant + stressed vowel +
consonant, double the last letter:vowels = a, e, i, o, u

stop → stopping

begin → beginning
cvc

Note that this exception does not apply when the last syllable of the base verb is not
stressed: Open= Opening
