GENERAL INFORMATION
ABOUT SIKKIM
Sikkim, state in India,is located in the northeastern part of the country, in the
eastern Himalayas. It is one of the smallest states in India. Sikkim is bordered by
the Tibet Autonomous Region of China to the north and northeast, by Bhutan to the
southeast, by the Indian state of West Bengal to the south, and by Nepal to the west. The
capital is Gangtok, in the southeastern part of the state.

A part of the Eastern Himalaya, Sikkim is notable for its biodiversity,


including alpine and subtropical climates, as well as being a host to Kangchenjunga,
the highest peak in India and third highest on Earth. Sikkim's capital and largest city
is Gangtok. Almost 35% of the state is covered by the Khangchendzonga National Park.

GDP of Sikkim was ₹0.287 lakh
crore (US$4.0 billion) according to
2019-20. Sikkim’s rank is 28 in
GDP among all INDIAN states.
Sikkim's economy is largely
dependent on agriculture and
tourism and it is among the fastest
growing economies of INDIA.
PER CAPITA INCOME OF
SIKKIM
The estimated per capita income across
the north-eastern state of Sikkim in
India stood at around 358 thousand
Indian rupees in the financial year 2019.
There was a consistent increase in the
income per capita in the state and was
more than twice, since the financial
year 2012. Goa recorded the highest
per capita income that year.
MAJOR, MICRO AND SMALL
SCALE INDUSTRIES
In Sikkim, industry plays a vital role in the economy of the State.
Sikkim has seen a great boom in the industries in the recent
years. Sikkim has now emerged as an Industrial Hub.
Sikkim had long been an agro-based society, but situations
changed thoroughly in the recent years. With the acceleration in
the socio-political aspect of the society of Sikkim, the growth of
industry in Sikkim has been tremendous.
Some of the industries of Sikkim that deserve a special mention
in this context are:

1. Pharmaceuticals.
2. Eco-tourism (Hotels).
3. Food Processing.
4. Breweries.
5. Cosmetics.
6. Security Ink.
7. Mattress.
8. Corrugated Boxes.
An estimate of the achievements of the government in exulting
the status of the Sikkim Industry are:
1. Revival of the Food Preservation Factory under the
Government of Sikkim.
2. Formation of Sikkim Temi Tea, Consultancy Services, Prime
Minister’s Employment Generation Programme, Directorate of
Handicrafts and Handloom, SIDICO, New District Handicrafts
and Handloom Centers, etc.
3. Other Programs, viz. Border Area Development Project,
Industrial Growth Center, Training of Rural Artisans,
Entrepreneurship Development Program.

The economy of Sikkim is linked with agriculture that serves as the
source of livelihood and economic security of sizeable native
population.
Major crops of Sikkim are :
• Rice
• Wheat
• Maize
• Finger Millet
• Barley
• Pulses
• Blackwheat
• Tuber crops, spices, fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants.
MINERALS IN SIKKIM
The important mineral resources of the State are copper-lead-zinc and
silver, reported in Bhotang, Rangpo and Dikchu in East Sikkim districts.
Occurrences of other minerals reported in the State include dolomite,
quartzite and talc/steatite/soapstone in West Sikkim district; limestone in
North Sikkim district and marble in East Sikkim and North Sikkim
districts. The reserves/resources of coal and the coalfield located in
Sikkim.

TRADES
The border trade via the Old Silk Route at Nathula reopened on
the 6th of July, 2006 amidst huge expectations of improving the
relation between the two upcoming superpowers of the world,
India and China. It was also expected to help in achieving
economic prosperity in the areas surrounding the Nathula Pass
in both the countries. The Border Trade remains officially open
for about six months every year from May to November.

There are anout 17,48,000 companies, in Sikkim.
Sikkim, bestowed with abundant natural resources, is now home to
more than 15 major pharma companies. These include units by
Cipla, Sun Pharma, Zydus Cadila, Alkem Lab, Intas Pharma,
Torrent Pharmaceuticals , Unichem, etc.
