Introduction
Summary of Discussion: The discussion on whether there should be universal health care or not is
very controversial. Many believe that we should while others don’t think we should. There are many
advantages and disadvantages to having universal health care. As of right now the U.S. is a private
health care system and not a universal.

Article: There are three different types of universal health care models

● Single-Payer Model
○ Provides free healthcare that is paid for from income tax revenue.
● Social health Insurance Model
○ Everyone buys healthcare through employers. Taxes are deducted payroll to cover the costs.
● National Health Insurance
○ Every citizen pays into a national insurance plan, costs are forced lower by the government.
Introduction
Pros: A few of the advantages of universal health care are;

● Lower health care costs

● More of a standard service
● Guides people to make healthier choices

Cons: A few disadvantages of having universal health care are;

● Government may limit service with low success rates

● Cost could overwhelm government budgets
● Long wait times for elective procedures
The “Pro” Argument
❖ No citizen is denied coverage

❖ Outcomes in vulnerable communities are improved

❖ Lower health care costs

❖ Improved quality of care

❖ Save money

❖ Healthier workforce

❖ Improved nation
The “Anti” Argument
❖ Long wait times

❖ Limit the accuracy of patient care

❖ People could stop taking care of their health

❖ Limit to new technology

❖ Costs could overwhelm government budget

❖ Provide multiple systems of coverage

❖ Limits the payouts that doctors receive

The Rebuttal
Counter Pro

● Outcomes in lower communities improved

○ Time limit with each patient, may result in misdiagnosis
○ Slow rate of improvement due to long wait time for certain procedures
● Improved quality of care
○ Ties in with amount of time patients are given & whether the result of the time limit will lead to “better
care”.

Counter Anti

● Cost could overwhelm government budget

○ Transition into universal healthcare
○ Long term -universal healthcare creates healthier nation decreasing expenditure on healthcare.
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
● The topic of universal health care is highly controversial.
● Currently the U.S. is a private health care system not universal.
● Some of the positive factors regarding universal health care system
include no person is denied coverage, lower healthcare costs, overall
better healthcare is delivered, and a better and lively workforce.
● However, there are also some negative issues associated such as
limitation to new and improved technologies, lower salary to healthcare
professionals, and costs can create hurdles for the government.
